Cambodia will today stage its second biggest military drill by firing hundreds of live rockets in two provinces adjoining the Khmer-Thai borders.

Gen. Kun Kim, Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces, had told Kampuchea Thmey newspaper that the drills will be the biggest ever Cambodia's military drill since the test-firings of 200 BM-21 rockets in March. He said the drills involve the 51st Division and will take place in Pursat province and at the headquarter of the Military Region 5 in Rattanak Mondul district in Battambang province on the border with Pailin province.

In March, Cambodia had test-fired 200 rounds of BM-21 rockets in Kampong Chhnang province to flex its military muscle after a long simmering border dispute with Thailand.

The military drill and live rocket tests will start today 23rd September and will last for three days involving 100 tanks and armoured personnel carriers which have just arrived in Sihanoukville Port from Bulgaria on Monday. The test firings will include the firings of 23 milimetres and 37 milimetres anti-aircraft machine guns and the firings of 12 long-range artillery pieces.

Cambodian military officials said the drill is not aimed at showing or flexing Cambodia's military muscle, but is aimed at the strengthening of Cambodian military capability only.
