Cambodian officials have been tight-lipped about the origin of the nearly 100 newly-acquired tanks and APCs which have been delivered to Cambodia on Monday and now are being unloaded at the Sihnoukville Port. They only said that those military hardware were from an Eastern European country, but there are rumours milling around that they were made in the Ukraine.

Now Cambodian officials have revealed that those tanks and APCs were purchased from Bulgaria. A defence official who spoke on condition of anonymity, said those tanks and APCs will be transported to a tank regiment command base in Kampong Speu province and then will be distributed to military bases throughout the country.

He said the T-54 tanks have been in use during the Cambodian civil war in the 1980s. He said the delivery of the 94 tanks and armoured personnel carriers coincide with the training of 800 officers on how to operate these military hardware.
