Mr. Ly Borin, an official from the Cambodian Railway Authority, said a 120-kilometre railway line connecting Touk Meas district in Kampot province with Phnom Penh has been fixed and upgraded and is scheduled to be opened for use in October.

Mr. Ly Borin said the upgrade of the railway, which is 70-80% completed at this stage, was contracted to a French and Thai company which had worked tirelessly to complete the project to fulfill the October deadline. He said the fast-tracking of the railway line construction was taimed at completing it in time for the transportation of cement supplies from a cement factory in Kampot to the construction sites in Phnom Penh which are in dire needs of these materials.

Mr. Ly Borin said an Australian company, Toll Holdings Ltd which had won a contract from the Cambodian government to manage and maintain the railway line in Cambodia, has put an order to purchase a train engine and its carriages worth $80 million to operate on the Cambodian rail line.

Good, another plus for Cambodia's infrastructure. Kompot is one of a strategic location for transferring import and export goods and products. As far as distance, it is closer to Phnom Penh. There is a plan to construct a port and at least 20 manufacturing facilities in the area. With the railroad system up and running, goods and products can be quickly sent and received conveniently.
