President of Slovakia, Mr. Ivan Gasparovic, has touched down at Phnom Penh International Airport at 4:30 p.m yesterday for a 4-day official visit to Cambodia from 7-10 September at the invitation of King Norodom Sihamoni.

The visit was aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and friendship after the two countries had established diplomatic relations in 1997 when Slovakia broke away from the former Republic of Czechoslovakia in 1993.

Mr. Koy Kuong, spokesman for the Foreign Ministry, said Mr. Gasparovic will have an audience with King Sihamoni, meet with Senate President Chea Sim, National Assembly President Heng Samrin and Prime Minister Hun Sen. Mr. Koy Kuong said the two-way trades between the two countries are improving, with the first six months of this year Cambodia had exported to Slovakia worth $500,000 worth of goods and Slovakia exported to Cambodia $9,000 worth of goods.

The Slovak president has brought with him a 15-member trade delegation who will have a series of meetings with 120 members of the Cambodian government and trade officials to discuss about trades and investments, in particular on agricultural, tourism, manufacturing industry and service sectors.

According to trade figures from the Commerce Ministry, the two-way trades between Cambodia and Slovakia have increased by 52% in 2008 worth $2.25 million.
