Deum Ampil website claimed that the spokesman for UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon (pictured) said the UN chief is ready to mediate the Cambodian-Thai border conflict if formally asked.
The online newspaper said that in an email response to its questions today, 18th August, Mr. Farhan Haq, spokesman for Mr. Ban Ki-Moon, said the UN chief is ready to mediate the Cambodian-Thai conflict if both countries ask him.
The spokesman said, however, that up until this moment the UN has not received a letter or a formal request for Mr. Ban Ki-Moon to mediate.
On 8th August, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen wrote two letters to the UN protesting against alleged statement by Thai PM Abhisit Vejjajiva that Thailand is prepared to use "military means" to settle the dispute if negotiations and diplomatic channels failed.
