Hundreds of Thai troops had been deployed along the Cambodian-Thai border in Banteay Meanchey and Sakeo provinces to provide security for the visit of Princess Chulabhon Walailak (pictured), the 4th daughter of King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who paid a visit to the area on Tuesday 17th August, reports Radio Free Asia.

According to the report, the princess went to visit Thai villagers and to inaugurate a school in Kok Tyoung district. Kok Tyoung was a former Khmer refugee centre where hundreds of thousands of Khmer refugees took refuge in 1979 and 1980.

Mr. Chhouk Ang, Cambodian commander of Batallion 911, said hundreds of Thai troops were deployed near the border area while 4 jet fighters flew over the area many times. "They were deployed to provide security for their princess in Kok Tyoung village about 5 kilometres from the border. She is Sirindhorn's sister. There is no problem. They didn't touch us and 4 of their jet fighters flew back and forth, but they dare not fly over our territory and they told our frontline troops about this as well", he said.

Brigadier General Hun Hean (Hun Sen's nephew), Police Commissioner of Banteay Meanchey province, said the Thai deployments did not affect Cambodia's security, but just to provide the security for the Thai princess. "She came to visit her people. There is no problem. Their troops have informed us about her visit. This morning I went to the border area and I saw some planes flying", he said.

Cambodian troops said the Thai side informed them that Thai troops could be deployed in the area up until 30th or 31st of August as Princess Sirindhorn, older sister of Pricness Chulabhon, planned to make a visit to her people in the area as well.

Yes, I thought Kok Tyoung is a Cambodian territory. In 1979, my parents, brothers and sisters escaped from my village and stayed briefly in Kok Tyoung before moving to Choumroum Thmey (New Camp) and then to Khao-I-Dang Camp in Thailand. At that time, Kok Tyoung and Choumroum Chass (Old Camp) was controlled by Khmer freedom fighters, not Thai soldiers.
