Cambodian not concerned of Thailand purchasing of six jet fighters

Spokesman for the Cambodian Foreign Ministry said Cambodia is not concerned about Thailand's plan to purchase 6 new jet fighters from Sweden at the price of 3000 million Baht ($100 million) each, reports Deum Ampil.

Mr. Koy Kuong (pictured), spokesman for the Cambodian Foreign Ministry, said Cambodia is not concerned because Cambodia has had sufficient military preparations to defend Cambodia's sovereignty, territorial integrity and against any invasions from any neighbouring countries.

Lately, the Thai government had asked the Thai parliament to approve $500 million budget for the purchase of six JAS 39 Gripen jet fighters from Sweden at a time when there are increasing border tensions with Cambodia.

On Friday 20th August, the Bangkok Post reported that the Thai military had taken a delivery of one of the six JAS 39 Gripen jet fighters Thailand had ordered from Sweden. Other than this, the Thai military will receive 20,000 million Baht ($628 million) in the next 3 years from the national Budget to purchase 1,500 machine guns, 60 battle tanks, 2 jet fighters and 11 helicopters.

The big annual military spending of 170,200 million Baht ($5,000 million) for the year 2011 has come under strong criticism from the Thai opposition parties.

The total annual Cambodian Military Budget is only $500 million. Mr. Cheam Yeap, chairman of parliamentary committee on finance, has said that Cambodia plans to recruit more troops, but has no plan to increase military spending.

Thailand threat so many countries nearby her. I just doubt why we don't joint together and fight with Thailand. Or forget!
We don't have to do it. Thailand want to fight each other. As we can see, Thais in the south, in the north, and in the central are almost separated into pieces. I hope it comes soon.

I thought Thai generals had made much claims of Thailand's military superiority over Cambodia, why purchased more weapon? I hope Thailand doesn't have this delusional paranoia that Thailand is becoming a weaker country and is being bully by her weaker neighbor, Cambodia. Maybe by purchasing more arms, Thailand would scare Cambodia to submission and hand over Preah Vihear...heh? I think it's working the opposite, Cambodia is running out fear, Cambodia is becoming more courages. Given about a decade or so, Cambodia should stand toe-to-toe with Thailand. For now, it wouldn't be fair fight.

It's kind of pricey for a Saab JAS 39 Gripen, a $100 millions a pop? I thought it's about $60 millions each. Maybe that price of each jet also include bombs and missiles. Either way, I hope Thailand isn't going broke by beefing up her military. It's unnecessary to add more weapons in her military arsenal. Thailand already has the American made F-16 and 80's technology F-5, now more jet fighters? So what Thailand has is more than sufficient to fight Cambodia. I hope Thailand isn't going to bomb her way to victory over Cambodia with those fancy jets. Cambodia has purchased quite amount of SAMs to counterstrike many fast flying jet fighters streaking from Thailand into Cambodia's airspace. SAM is alot cheaper than SAAB JAS-39 Gripen.
Anyway, I think Thailand is playing a psychological warfare with Cambodia. By swinging her big guns and flexing her muscles, Thailand hope to pursuade fear into the heart and mind of Cambodia and convince Hun Sen to give in what Thailand wants. We shall see.

Thailand is using its military capability to intimidate Cambodia that come to war Cambodia has no chance. I think Cambodia should acquire more tanks, weapons and some war planes as well. Then we would not be intimidated.
