The Cambodian-Thai Joint Border Commission (JBC) will meet in Bangkok from 8-10 September, after nearly a year of absence due to diplomatic and border tensions between the two countries, reports Koh Santepheap.

The JBC was scheduled to meet on 27-28 August under the chairmanship of Cambodian Minister of Defence Gen. Tea Banh and Thailand's Minister of Defence Gen. Prawit Wongsuwan, but was abruptly cancelled due to renewed tensions over Preah Vihear dispute.

On 27th August, a Thai newspaper reported that Gen. Prawit had ordered all relevant Thai authorities to get ready for the meeting which will be held at Renaissance Hotel in Bangkok. The report said that the framework or the agenda of the meeting had been pre-approved by the Thai parliament. It said, however, that they are not related to the previous agreements which had not been ratified by the Thai parliament, two years after they were agreed by the two sides.

Cambodia had repeatedly insisted that it will not agree to any meeting with Thailand over border issues, unless the Thai parliament ratified the previous agreements first.

Both sides had agreed to return to the negotiation table after fugitive ex-Thai PM Thaksin Shinawatra had resigned as advisor to Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen and to the Cambodian government. Both countries now have re-established diplomatic ties at ambassadorial level, nearly a year after both countries withdrawn their ambassadors after Prime Minister Hun Sen appointed Mr. Thaksin as his advisor.
