The Thai Foreign Ministry has denied an allegation by the Cambodian Foreign Ministry that a Cambodian prisoner arrested on May 19th for allegedly torching buildings in Bangkok in the aftermath of the deadly crackdown on the Red Shirt protesters by the Thai security forces, reports everyday.com.
In an article in the Phnom Penh Post, Mr. Koy Kuong (pictured), spokesman for the Cambodian Foreign Ministry, alleged that Thai police had tortured the Cambodian prisoner, Sanmanee Phet (San Mony Phet), while he was in police custody. “He suffered from torture before the Cambodian embassy visited him,” Koy Kuong said last week. “He had wounds on his chin and his chest”, he added.
However, Mr. Thani Thongpakdee, spokesman for the Thai Foreign Ministry, said on Monday that there is no evidence to show that Sanmanee Phet (San Mony Phet) has been tortured since his arrest. “From the information we have received, there is no indication that [San Mony Peth] has in any way been tortured during his detention.”, he said through an email.
San Mony Phet was a Cambodian national who married to a Thai lady and they have one child together. On 19th of May, he claimed he came out to watch burning buildings located near his work place and was arrested by the Thai police who accused him of torching the building. He denied all charges and has told Cambodian consular officials that he was beaten and punched in the face during the interrogation by the Thai police.
