No compromise on Sam Rainsy's case: govt

"There will be no political compromise and reconciliation to allow opposition leader Sam Rainsy to return back to Cambodia". This is a strong statement from a senior government official in response to the opposition's request for a political solution to end Sam Rainsy's exile, reports Deumm Ampil.

Mr. Tith Sothea (pictured), government spokesman for the Quick and Press Reaction Unit, said there should be no political compromise to the case because it is a legal issue and a personal issue of Mr. Sam Rainsy.

Tith Sothea's strong comment came after Mr. Son Chhay, a senior MP from the opposition Sam Rainsy Party (SRP) told reporters outside of a Phnom Penh restaurant yesterday that Sam Rainsy's case is a political case and therefore there must be a political solution to it.

Mr. Tith Sothea said Cambodia can still have political stability and economic developments regardless of whether Sam Rainsy is in the country or not.

Tith Sothea's comments seem to echo Prime Minister Hun Sen's speech delivered at a graduation ceremony in Phnom Penh recently that there will be no Sam Rainsy's participation in future elections in Cambodia.

Mr. Chan Soveth, a human rights investigator for the human rights group Adhoc, said Cambodian leaders had made political compromises in the past. He added that both sides should find the middle way to reach a political compromise in a view to foster a good co-operation in the continuation of the developments of the country.

The SRP had sought outside intervention to the case. On 17th July, SRP officials met U.S Under-Secretary of State William Burns to discuss about the political situations and judicial independence in Cambodia, when it said it will raise the issue of Mr. Sam Rainsy's case with Mr. William Burns.

Mr. Sam Rainsy was convicted in absentia on 27th January, 2010 and sentenced to 2 years jail for uprooting border posts along the Cambodian Vietnamese border in late 2009, allegedly planted inside Khmer territory. Rainsy said the court case against him was politically-charged and chose to remain in exile in Paris ever since.

The traitors Hun Sen and Tith Sothea are protecting Viet interests and persecute Khmer patriots. They give lands to Vietnam and jail the ones who try to defend our lands. Unspeakable.

This is a good sure sign that the SRP are weakening. Mr. Son Chhay request have made the party an even bigger joke than it already is. SRP may have the right intention for the country but the lack of intelligent planning, strategy. SRP is the next fall after Funcinpec. They make it seem like Sam Rainsy is the only capable leader for the party. Hun Sen is right when he question who in the SRP party want power so bad that they name the party after themselves?
