A senior government official has warned the opposition Sam Rainsy Party (SRP) not to exploit the murder of union leader Chea Vichea for political reasons, after they and a number of of union leaders had attempted to screen a controversial doucmentary about his murder despite a ban from the Phnom Penh City Hall, reports Cambodian Express News.

On International Labour Day on 1st May, Mr. Rong Chhun, president of the Confederations of Cambodian Unions, and a number of SRP officials defied the ban and attempted to raise the projector screens twice to screen the documentary, titled "Who killed Chea Vichea?", in a public park. Chea Vichea was murdered in broad daylight on 22nd January 2004 and many people, including the SRP, are suspicious that the authority was complicit in his murder.

On 3rd May, Minister of Information Khieu Kanharith warned the SRP not to repeat baseless accusations and tried to exploit Chea Vichea's murder for political reasons. He said the court is investigating their baseless accuastions and illegal actions.

Mr. Thach Setha, former senator and a Phnom Penh councillor, said the reason the authority banned the film was because it might be the one who was behind Chea Vichea's murder and it is afraid to see the truth. He said if the authority has nothing to hide, it must allow the film to be shown publicly so people can learn the truth about his murder.

Mrs. Mu Sochua, one of SRP MPs, said she will organise the screening of the documentary at the party headqurter for free. and Mr. Rong Chhun said he will make copies of the video and distribute it for free to the public.

Mr. Tith Sothea, spokesman for the government's Press and Quick Reaction Unit, said the film was an illegal import so it has to be banned. He said the planned screening at the SRP headquarter is also banned and if they proceed with the screening, all equipments will be confiscated and he warned that those who defied the bans might be prosecuted.

Only in communist countries that the authority try to ban a public screening of the film. Nothing illegal about their activities or about the film. It is just that the authority want to hide the facts about Chea Vichea's murder because it may be the one who was behind his killing.
