Fourteen MPs from the opposition Sam Rainsy Party (SRP) have sent a letter to the Constitutional Council requesting it to ask the government to suspend border demarcation works with Vietnam saying the works infringe upon the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Cambodia, reports Radio France Internationale.

The 14 MPs said that the planting of border posts no. 184, 185, 186 and 187 in Chantrea district of Svay Rieng province were not planted in accordance with 1:100,000 scale map officially deposited at the UN in 1964 and inscribed in the 1993 consitution.

Recently, the SRP had also sent a letter to Prime Minister Hun Sen asking him to suspend these demarcation works, but Mr. Heng Samrin, Chairman of the National Assembly, refused to forward the letter to the prime minister. This time, it is not sure if the Constitutional Council will accept their letter either, said the report.

In late 2009, Mr. Sam Rainsy and about 100 villagers uptooted 6 wooden border stakes in Chantrea district and he has been convicted for the destruction of public property and sentenced in absentia to 2 years jail term.

Mr. Var Kimhong, chief border negotiator, said the SRP's accusations are baseless and that the border demarcation works have been done in accordance with national and international laws.

Cambodia and Vietnam began their border demarcation works in 2006 along the 1270-kilometre long borders between the two countries. 111 of the 375 border posts had be planted so far and the demarcation works are scheduled to be completed in 2012.
