A newspaper boy who is a seller and distributor of Prey Nokor newspaper has been briefly detained by police in Phnom Penh on Monday, 5th April, for no apparent good reason, reports Radio Free Asia.

Mr. Ly Choun, editor of Prey Nokor, said the authority told him that the boy was detained because he had been hawking and selling the newspaper until 7pm. "That boy was hired by us to distribute and sell our newspapers. We have distributed them to newsstands and other market places, but these are surplus prints, so we hired him to sell the surplus newspapers so he can earn some money for his studies. He go around hawking and selling until 7pm, so when the authority saw him, they arrested him", he said.

Mr. Preap Borey, Inspector of Daun Penh District Police, confirmed the arrest but said it happened because of a misunderstanding as the boy was selling the paper at night time so authority doesn't know if he is distributing legal or illegal anti-government pamphlets. "We just want to know the original source. After we found out the truth, we didn't do anything to him", he said.

Mr. Ly Choun questioned the explanation from the authority by saying that it is not illegal and a crime to do business at night time.

Prey Nokor newspaper, named after the Khmer name for Ho Chi Minh City, is published and run by mostly Khmer Krom people and most articles report about news and events concerning about the suffering of the ethnic Khmer Krom people living in Southern Vietnam.
