Thai commander and soldiers have on 17th January strongly and repeatedly warned and threatened to use force to evict Cambodian troops from Phnom Trop, situated about 7 kilometres west of Preah Vihear temple, reports Kampuchea Thmey.
Cambodian military source said the warning happened in a meeting between Thai commander named Yuth and Cambodian commander, Mr. Chea Chun, on 16th January.
During the meeting, the Thai commander strongly demanded the Cambodian side to withdraw Cambodian troops from the right wing (right side) of Phnom Trop, but the Cambodian commander categorically rejected the Thai demand. Thai commander gave ultimatum to the Cambodian commander until the next day (17th) to withdraw his troops, but the Cambodian commander steadfastly rejected the demand saying that it is a Cambodian territory and that those Cambodian troops have been deployed in the area a long time ago.
The Thai commander said that this is an order from the top, but Cambodian commander said the Thai top military brass cannot order Cambodian troops what to do. The Thai commander then said he gives ultimatum until the next morning and if Cambodian troops are not withdrawn, he will launch an attack. The Cambodian commander counter by saying "try if you dare'.
After 2 hours of unfruitful of threats and counter-threats, the meeting had reached a slanging match and the accusations and counter-accusations reached boiling point which nearly lead to an armed clash at the meeting. Both sides then decided to postpone the meeting to consult their political leaders before meeting again next week.
Mr. Chea Chun said he will not withraw any Cambodian troops from the area as demanded by the Thai side because it is a Cambodian territory and that the Cambodian troops had been based in the area a long time ago. He said Cambodian troops are ready to counter any Thai attacks.
Gen. Chea Dara, Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Cambodian Armed Forces in charge of the Preah Vihear operations, said the Thai aggression happened after Thai Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya recently said that lands surrounding the Preah Vihear temple belong to Thailand. He added that Cambodian troops will do everything to protect Cambodian territorial integrity and won't be intimidated by any forces. He said Cambodian troops will use self-defence rights to defend against any attacks by Thai troops.
Phnom Trop is the scene of two brief armed clashes on 15th October 2008 and 3rd April 2009 between Thai and Cambodian troops where at least 7 soldiers from both sides have been killed.
At the time of this article going to press, the situations at Phnom Trop remain tense.

When this intimidating going to cease. Thais are good at this but they also know in their heart that it would be a battle they will never want to engage.
The southern people are waiting or the opportunity, so do Laos and Burma.
Thai troops look down on Khmer troops because they have far better weapons and far more more troops than the Cambodian army. So they used weapons and great numbers of troops to intimidate Khmer troops. But when it comes to real battle on the ground, they are very chicken because they never fought a war and they are scared of death.
Khmer soldiers should never be scared of these sorts of Thai bullying.
