The royalist Funcinpec Party has denied rumours that its Secretary General, Gen. Nhiek Bunchhay (pictured), had tendered his resignation as Deputy PM, reports Deum Ampil.
The rumours have been milling around since Sunday 24th January that Gen. Nhiek Bunchhay has tendered his resignation to Prime Minister Hun Sen. However, the source of the rumours did not specify the reasons of Bunchhay's alleged resignation.
Mr. Chhem Peth, Mr. Bunchhay's Chief of Cabinet, rejected the rumours saying Mr. Bunchhay has not resigned from his post as Deputy PM and that he is currently living at his house in the Phnom Penh suburb of East Chroy Changvar.
However, Mr. Tieng Vandarong, former Secretary of State of Ministry of Information who is a core member of the Funcinpec Party, said he had heard the rumours of Bunchhay's resignation. "I have heard these rumours as well, but I dont' know if they are true or not. A few days ago, I met him but he did not talk about that issue (resignation) to me", he said.
Mr. Phan Sithy, Chief of Cabinet of Funcinpec Party, said he had not heard the rumours. "I don't know about that issue (Bunchhay's resignation). May be it is true, but it is beyond what I need to know", he said.
Deuma Ampil attempted to reach Gen. Nhiek Bunchhay, but repeated telephone calls to the general went unanswered.
Gen. Nhiek Bunchhay was a fierce opponent of the the Khmer Rouge regime and the Vietnamese-installed government of Prime Minister Hun Sen and has fought as a resistance fighter against the Khmer Rouge from 1976 to 1979. When the Vietnamese army toppled the Khmer Rouge regime in 1979, he turned his resistance movement into fighting against the Vietnamese-installed regime of Prime Minister Hun Sen. He joined the then Prince Sihanouk when he formed the Funcinpec Movement in 1982. From 1993, Bunchhay served Deputy Chief of General Staff (Deputy Commander-in-Chief) of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces. When Prime Minister Hun Sen launched a coup d'etat against Funcinpec in July 1997, Nhiek Bunchhay fought fiercely against Mr. Hun Sen's forces. He was the only Funcinpec military leaders who has survived after more than 480 of his fighters surrendered and captured by Mr. Hun Sen's forces two days after the coup. More than 100 party officials, army commanders including generals, were tortured and brutally killed after their captures.
After the 1998 election, Gen. Nhiek Bunchhay has gone into obscurity. However, in 2006 he and his loyalists, aided and abbetted by Mr. Hun Sen, staged a successful party coup against Prince Ranaridhh and became party Secretary General which became the most powerful position in the party since the ouster of its president Prince Ranariddh.
