A chief of an orphanage in Kandal province has been detained on 29th October for beating and wounding orphaned children under his care, reports Koh Santepheap.

55 year-old Meth Narong has been detained for severely beating and wounding 14 year-old Soth Tra, 16 year-old Chuon Phanith, and 14 year-old Sanh Nimol because their matresses have been torn by a dog due to their carelessness.

According to police reports, on 27th October, the 3 boys brought their mattresses to sleep outside of the house because it was too hot inside of the house. When they were asleep at night time, the dog came and tore some parts of the mattresses. When Mr. Meth Narong came back from Phnom Penh he was very angry with the boys' carelessness and called them one by one and beat them 10 times each with the stick. The boy suffered bruises all over the body and 14 year-old Soth Tra suffered wounds to his head and eyes and was immediately kicked out of the orphanage by Meth Narong.

A human rights worker for Adhoc, Men Makara, who live nearby along with villagers immediately reported the incident to the police. Mr. Meth Narong was then detained by the police. Soth Tra was then taken to hospital by Men Makara for treatments to his wounds.

In an interview with Radio Free Asia, Soth Tra who had lived in the orphanage since he was 7 years old said that Meth Narong had always beaten the orphans under his care.

Mr. Men Makara told RFA that many influential people have phoned him to ask him to drop the charges against Meth Narong. "The result up to this hour is that the offender has been sent to the court, but we don't know whether the court will decide to detain him or not because last night I have received a lot of phone calls from many networks (people) asking to intervene in order to reach a compromise. My stance and the stance of the people who live here is that we have a strategy that we will never reach a compromise of the issue of criminal offence", he told RFA.

Recently, there has been many reports of child abuses by the carers. On 17 October, a couple has been arrested for cruelty against an 11 year-old girl under their car by torturing her and pinching her flesh with pliers, leaving horrible scars on the girl's body.

child abusers should have never allowed to work with the children in the first place. Before giving them jobs, NGOs should do some background checks.

Mr. Narong must be tried in court, fined or jailed then sacked from his job.
