According to Deum Ampil, an armed intruder attempted to rob his mother, who is a vendor, at 7pm on 16th October at Baray district of Kampong Thom province, but the 12 year-old boy fought fiercely against the armed intruder with his bare hand.
12 year-old Morm Chantha, a student of Prey Sro-Nge Hun Sen Primary School, had tried to stop a robber from robbing his mother, 29 year-old Ty Leng, while his father Chan Thorn, who is a police officer, was on duty.
According to Ty Leng, while packing her goods inside the room she heard a male voice asking her son "where is your mother?" and she walked out to investigate. When he saw Ty Leng, the gunman rushed toward to lady by pointing a gun at her. 12 year-old Chantha grabbed the gun by saying "what you want to do to my mother?" The gunman shouted out to the boy "let go of my gun or I'll shoot you", but the boy didn't release his grip of the gun and tried to wrestle with the gunman. Then the gunmand fired a single shot, hitting the boy on the wrist through to his thigh and his ankle, breaking two of his ankle's bones.
Neighbours rushed to the house after hearing the gunshot in an attempt to help the family, but did not dare to help after threatened with the gun by the hooded man, who left empty-handed.
The wounded boy has been sent to Phnom Penh Hospital due to the severity of his wounds.
