Police cover-up of a shooting at Heng Heng Jewelry

Source: Deum Ampil newspaper
Reported in English by Khmerization

Phsar Thmey II district police has been accused of a cover up after the Heng Heng Jewelry shop has been shot at in an apparent robbery attempt.

Witnesses said at around 4-5 am in the morning of 6th September, a group of gunmen drove a luxury car and stopped in front of the shop located in Phnom Penh's Phsar Thmey II district and sprayed many rounds of bullets into the shop and drove off.

The incident was reported to Phsar Thmey II police but, according to Deum Ampil, the police tried to deny that the attempted robbery had occurred and refused to make a report to the higher authority.

Witnesses said they saw a group of youth drove a luxury car toward the shop, stopped, opened the car window and sprayed many bullets into the shop, missing the occupants. No one was hurt in the shooting.

It is not sure if the shooting stems from personal disputes or an attempted robbery, but according to unofficial information it might stem from a personal issue.

However, Mr. Sem Pisith, commander of Phsar Thmey II Police Station, denied that the shooting occurred. "There is no such case had occurred", he said when contacting on the phone by Deum Ampil on the afternoon of 7th September.

But according to the above source, the police had some information in relation to the above shooting but it is not sure if the police dare to act on this case because the perpetrators could be protected by a much high-ranking man in uniform.

In recent weeks, spates of violent robberies in Phnom Penh had taken place almost everyday where business owners had been brutally killed in those robberies. So far, no one was arrested.

In response to the issue, the Interior Ministry has announced that it is reshuffling its police departments.

This is why I keep saying that the police are the ones who committed the many violent robberies in Phnom Penh in recent weeks.

These crocked cops demand their protection or leave-you-alone money. When they don't get it, they send in their goon squad in to intimidate or kill people. That's what that is. It is just f'd up.
