Hun Sen: Why the hell America came to Cambodia for in the 1970s?

Source: everyday.com.kh
Reported in English by Khmerization

Prime Minister Hun Sen (pictured) had launched a scathing attack on the United States policy toward Cambodia in the 1970s in a public speech on Tuesday.

Speaking at a graduation ceremony on the 12th of August at the Royal University of Law and Economics, where he threatened to take over Phnom Penh by force in two hours, Mr. Hun Sen bitterly attacked the U.S policy toward Cambodia in the 1970s by asking "why the hell America came to Cambodia for in the 1970s?"

He said many American soldiers died in Cambodia which up until now Cambodia is still unable to find all the remains of the American soldiers to be repatriated to their homeland.

Mr. Hun Sen attacked the United States for being too selfish by saying that it only thinks of its own interests wherever it goes. He also attacked the United States for helping only useless people such as the "useless Lon Nol".

He said: "I speak the truth: the people whom America helped have been living in starvation for a long time, and there are many governments that America helped but they still cannot survive and at the end they realised that America is only thinking about its own interests, not the interests of those puppets."

He has accused all Khmer opposition politicians who are leaning toward the United States of too pro-America and too proud of American policy, but at the end America will abandon them like Cambodia's Marshall Lon Nol and the Thieu-Ky regime of South Vietnam in the 1970s.

He is mentally unstable to be a prime minister. He is suffering from a schizophrenia or some sort of a manic depression. What happen if one day forget to take his medication for his schizophrenia or a manic depression then he might wipe out Phnom Penh city like he had just threatened to do so. That would be a disaster for Cambodia.

Like previous dictators: Stalin, Mao, Franco, Marcos, Pinochet, he has become a megalomaniac and mentally unstable seeing enemies rigth, left and center. Poor Cambodia to have to put up with such leader. It is time for the people to raise!

Relax folks, it's not the end of the world for Cambodia. Saddam Hun Sen is just going through PMS. He's not going to wipe out Phnom Penh in 2 hours, just let him exhale his steam, give him some prozac and let him get some sleep. Poor bastard stresses himself out from that Mu Sochua lady. She shouldn't scared him like that.

I don't care about Hun Sen's behavior. This time, he speaks true. It is right.

What the fuck US come to cambodia.
You come to cambodia, you used B-52... as a result , alot of mine or s.... under ground.

US never paid to any internatioanl organisation to clear land mine in cambodia.

Now, US wants money that Lon nol government borrowed during that time. OK! if cambodia have money for US.

What about cambodia life that lost during that time, What about US government , are you going to make compensation to khmer people victim during that time?

There are many many....

don't want to talk more.

Does he always make an appearance at graduation ceremonies? He's like an unpopular uncle who pops up at every party. But I do agree with him on this one. The US is indirectly responsible for the shitty situation SE asia is in and has had to endure for the last few decades. Cambodians should turn their attention to their more immediate neighbors.

Do you really think the Koreans and Chinese are here to do Cambodia a favour????

Wake up! Our country is being sold to people who couldn't give a #@$* if Cambodia exists or not. All they want is money to take back to their own countries.

At least the Americans talk about human rights etc even if it is a pretence. Also, don't forget that the Americans gave the Cambodian government aid and money so it would fight against the 'communists' (some of whom are now in government). They also now give the government aid and money to develop the country - why do the Americans come here???? Damn them!!! (joke)

Would SEAsia be in a better position if it wasn't based upon the asian model of production which invests leaders with absolute power. A situation that was very easy for the Americans, Vietnamese, Chinese and Russia to manipulate to their own benefits.

If SEAsians had a greater tradition of leading instead of following then certain 'big men' would never have been allowed to exercise such absolute power, which led to and is still leading to massive corruption and the siphoning off of aid and money into elite overseas bank accounts. The visa exemption for Singapore (the Asian Switzerland in regards banking) makes a short hop with a suitcase loaded with cash so much easier now.

What does it say to law graduates when the prime minister turns up to your graduation and tells you that he will lock up all opposition party members and use the military if necessary?

It says, regardless of what you learnt for X number of years and the books you read, the real situation is that those in power have all the power. Laws and constitutions don't matter shit.

The kind of language that Hun Sen used in his speech during graduation of law students is not appropriate. As PM he should be a role model to those law students by speaking politely and diplomatically. The thuggish and gangster-like language that he used during that graduation ceremony will certainly influence those students to think that it is OK for a leader of a country to use such obscene language.

I think Hun Sen is predicting his own demise by publicly telling his opponents, not necessarily from the oppositions, but those from his own party, that he intends to be the PM for another 24 years as he is prepared to stand in election in 2023 again.

Some people in his party cannot wait any longer that they will get rid of him by whatever means they can as soon as possibly can.

I have to agree with some of these comments.... it is very true we Khmer should wake up and should keep in mind that no body loves you like you love yourself. So what ever other countries do is that they do for their own benefits and objectives. So in terms of the period 1975-75 you have to blame the world powers. They used Cambodia as a bate to achieve the goal. The only differences of those benefits of those powerful countries is one achieve than others. For the USA I must say they didn't gain as much as some other countries, at least they did some good things afterwards like they pressured Vietnam to leave Cambodia in 1989. Also the Chinese had changed their politics with Khmer Rough as well when they started dealing with the western investors in the last 20 years otherwise they would be still sucking the blood from us Khmer fighting each other.

What Hun Sen said about America is partly correct, but he is doing the same with Vietnam and China right now.

He was propped up by VN and can survive politically this long due to the fact that VN is his backbone politically and militarily. How much did he do for VN? How much territories Cambodia lost to VN because of treaties signed by Hunn Sen? He doesn't care how much VN chipped away our territories as long as they let him rule Cambodia.

With China, how much lands, forests and mineral exploration rights Hun Sen has granted to Chinese companies? He should look at himself first before saying anything about other people. He is a hypocrite!
