Cambodia plans to send a diplomatic note to Thailand next week to request it to close down an official Thai Prime Minister's website, ilovethailand.org, that claims that parts of today's Cambodian territories were actually Thai territories.
Mr. Koy Kuong, spokesman for the Cambodian Foreign Ministry, flatly rejected the website's claims by saying that it is twisting the history and is inciting angers among the people of the two neighbouring nations. He said: "They (Thais) claimed that they have lost parts of their territories to neighbouring countries, and among those countries, they had mentioned that they had lost some territories to Cambodia as well. These claims are unacceptable to us and we will write a clarification article dismissing the website's video clip because these claims are contrary to the history. The true history is that our country (Cambodia) was the one who had lost parts of our territories to that country (Thailand)."
On Sautrday 11th, the Thai PM, Mr, Abhisit Vejjajiva, launched a website, ilovethailand.com, which claimed that the Cambodian provinces of Siem Reap, Battambang and Preah Vihear were Thai territories lost to Cambodia.
Mr. Rong Chhun, president of the Cambodian Independent Teachers Association, said the Thai claims are twisting the truth and the history. He said: "All publications in all of Thai websites are always twisting the history. We know that the Thais had alsways have ambitions to take Khmer lands."
Mr. Sambo Pannara, professor of history at the Royal University of Phnom Penh, said that during the Angkorian times in the 12th century, Cambodian territories extended west to Burma, north to China and south to Malaysia. He added that Cambodia had lost large part of its territories to Thailand and Vietnam.
Prof. Khin Sok, professor of Khmer, Thai, Laotian and Burmese history at the INALCO Institute in Paris said Thailand had only existed in the 13th century (when the T'ai people migrated from Nachao of Yunan province in southern China to settle in the north of present Thailand and expanded its territories southward as it grew stronger militarily).
According to history, Siem Reap, Battambang, Sirisophon and Preah Vihear provinces were annexed by Thailand- then known as Siam- in 1794. They were only returned to Cambodia in 1907 under the Franco-Siamese Treaty.
Other Khmer provinces annexed by Thailand in the late 18th century were Kauk Khan (Sisaket), Surin, Sakeo, Nokor Reach (Korat), Buriram, Trat, Prachinburi and many more, where a large Khmer-speaking population are still residing.
