Deputy PM Sok An (pictured) flew to Spain on Saturday to fight we he called "Thailand's unlawful violations" of Cambodian sovereignty, reports Deum Ampil.

Mr. Sok An was reacting to media reports that Thailand will propose to the World Heritage Committee during a meeting in Spain to de-register Cambodia's Preah Vhiear temple from the World Heritage List. Preah Vihear temple was listed on the World Heritage List on 7th July 2008 and on 15th July, Thailand sent its troops to occupy the areas surrounding the temple.

Speaking to journalists at the airport before he boarded the plane for Spain, Mr. Sok An said: "The invasion of Thai troops over the sovereignty of Cambodia was an invasion not only for the control of Cambodian territories, but also for the purpose of control over Preah Vihear temple which had just been registered by Unesco less than one year ago."

Thailand has repeatedly said that it will ask the World Heritage Committee to review its decision to list the temple during a meeting in Seville, Spain next week. Reacting to the Thai plan, Mr. Sok An said: "The actions of the top Thai officials, including PM Abhisit, the Thai Foreign Minister and other officials, were inappropriate and were actions coming only from the people who don't know the laws."

Mr. Sok An said that the Thai invasion of Cambodian territories have pushed Unesco to send its officials to visit the Preah Vihear temple more often where they have seen the blatant Thai aggression. He said that in this modern age, countries in the world want to have good relations with their neighbours, but Thailand did the contrary by sending troops to invade Cambodian territories which had caused border tensions with Cambodia.

Regarding the Thai request for the Unesco to review its decision, Mr. Sok An said: "It will not be successful. Unesco will only review its decision if the sites/buildings are in its original forms after it was registered by the World Heritage Committee."

The Deputy PM added that the Thais have never been happy when Cambodia had put forward any sites for registration by Unesco, such as when Cambodia put forward Angkor Wat and Preah Vihear temple for registration in the World Heritage List.
