Cambodia signs contract to protect 60,000 hectares of forest Those hoping to volunteer abroad in Cambodia may be pleased to learn that the country has boosted its efforts to protect some of its forested areas.

In a bid to encourage environmentally friendly practices among its communities, Cambodia has agreed to embark upon a project which will result in the protection of 60,000 hectares of its forested areas.

Based in the province of Oddar Meanchey, the initiative agreed upon by US-based firm terra Global Capital and the Cambodian Forestry Commission will see the area produce at least 8.5 million carbon offsets within the next 30 years.

Mark Poffenberger, head of Community Forestry International stated: "The success of the Oddar Meanchey project opens the door to long-term financing for Cambodia’s national community forestry programme, which could eventually encompass and protect over two million hectares of forest."

Last week, Cambodia received further good news after Thailand agreed to return artifacts stolen and smuggled from the country around ten years ago.
