Catch Dengue Fever

Everyone has been worried about flu this winter. Now, Dengue Fever is about to arrive.
Don’t worry. It’s Dengue Fever, a band from Los Angeles that plays a hybrid of Cambodian pop music and American rock.
On Sunday night, the band makes its Delaware debut at the Arden Gild Hall in Arden. Fronted by Ch’hom Nimol, a Cambodian pop vocalist who sings in Khmer (the language spoken in Cambodia), the band also features Ethan Holtzman (organ), Zac Holtzman (guitar), David Ralicke (sax), Senon Williams (bass) and Paul Smith (drums). The band is touring in support of its new album, “Venus On Earth.”
“We recorded the album last year and finished it in September,” Williams said during a phone interview. “I have a studio at my house. We’d do the basic tracks at Jim Putnam’s Phase Four Studio – concentrating on drums and bass.

“After that, we’d take it back to my studio to do the guitars, horns, keyboards and vocals. A few of the new songs were jams that we’d edit down and then re-record. Others were recorded before we even got the vocal melody. Then Nimol would take it and turn it in to her style of singing.”
The band’s debut album was filled with covers of Cambodian pop classics. The second album was “Escape From Dragon House” in 2005, which integrated styles with lots of multi-tracking and a somewhat psychedelic vibe. The new album is more basic.
“Our other records were more layered,” Williams said. ‘This time, we stripped it down and let Nimol’s voice come forward more. There was a strong effort to make it more minimal – barebones, yet more melodic.”
