Authorities seize illegal timber in two provinces

Military police yesterday arrested a man in Kampong Chhnang for allegedly transporting timber illegally through the province. The bust, made at about 9am, was one of several reported in recent days.
Military police spokesman Eng Hy confirmed gendarmerie officers had arrested a man for trafficking lumber in Kampong Chhnang but declined to give further details about case. “We have sent the suspect to the Forestry Administration,” he said.
According the military police’s website, the suspect, Chuob Vanna, 32, was found with seven pieces of wood in his car.
Meanwhile, on Tuesday, Kampong Chhnang Forestry Administration officers confiscated a car carrying 35 pieces of luxury thnong wood in Boribor district’s Ponlai commune, though the driver escaped, according to local news.
On the same day, forestry officers in Stung Treng also stopped a car carrying 58 pieces of thnong in Kbal Romea commune, according to commune chief Loth Maron.
The seizures come on the heels of a 2.5-tonne timber bust in the Phnom Oral Wildlife Sanctuary on Sunday and Monday.
