Union leader, factory spar in court over misspellings

Union leader Pav Sina appeared before Phnom Penh Municipal Court yesterday in relation to a lawsuit filed by hat factory Southland, but refused to answer questions because his name had been misspelled “Bav Sina” on the summons.

Sina, who is the president of Collective Union of Movement of Workers, is being sued because he misspelled the names of two workers in a list of employees at Southland who wanted to form a union, leading to the factory to accuse him of forgery and misinformation.

“They said the name of workers in the list I sent to them were not the names of their workers. But then they made spelling mistakes typing [my name].”

The case is the second Southland has filed against Sina. He said that the Phnom Penh factory resorted to taking him to court every time its workers attempted to establish a union.

Separately, Ung Channarith, director of the Legal Department of the Committees for the Settlement of Strikes and Demonstrations at the Labour Ministry, registered a complaint against Sina and three other unionists – Mann Saban, Suth Cheth, and Tuy Vang – for public defamation, insulting a public servant, and blocking public streets.

In another administrative error, the summons was sent to the wrong union’s address. Sina said he still had not received the document.
