Manekseka Sangkum:
Should Khmer people take greater pride in the riel and its usage in place of foreign currencies? After all, it is and has been one of their nation's foremost symbols and identities? Well, the lack of public confidence in the riel is truly imposed and circumstantial, and probably has little to do with the destructive legacy of the Khmer Rouge who abolished it when they came to power in April 1975.
One should only take pride in preserving and defending a thing knowing it retains all of its core value and substance. The lack of appreciation in the riel is principally a consequence and by-product of the government's failed economic policies and mismanagement that have characterised its prolonged one-party rule since the collapse of the KR regime. The return to the free market since that collapse has been a positive in the national economic resuscitation process, but that alone has not been enough to inject much needed vitality and strength into that process whilst rampant institutional corruption and administrative bodies have been deliberately veered towards propping up a regime that has not been born of the authentic national will or designs. The state of the riel is no different from that of most other Khmer national identities and institutions at this juncture, from the monarchy to the "national airline", the military and police to the Bokor resort: it is simply divested of its quintessence and its soul. Besides, most people pay for their goods and services by cash and not credit/debit cards, and it takes a lot of riels to buy even a few kilos of fish! And if you happen to be dyslexic in numbers and numerals as is the case with this writer, then yes you are in real trouble! That's all.

OK, its time for 'Change'...I want to change my dollars into...?? Could anyone give me insight into the next bull market in the currency trading arena? Japanese Yen? China Yuan?...etc
Most people don't really know what money is. True money cannot be manipulate or loses its value by time. But paper currencies of the world could be manipulated to be worth more or less by the people in authority.
If the Riel has true value to back the note then the note is worth face value. Cambodia Riel could be worth only in what is backing up its true value by mean of redeemable in gold or silver at the depository place. This will stabilize the currency fluctuation and people would want to hold on to something that they perceive that has everlasting value if is redeemable for hard currency.
US dollars used to be redeemable at one time. Meaning the Green Back was backed by gold and silver. Now its only worth by peoples accepting it as something of greater value or by faith in the US institution.
Currencies of the world are like boats in the ocean, some are sinking faster than the others - but all are sinking. This is why the rich hoard gold and silver to protect their sinking dollars or whatever currency is.
I don't know if any currency in the world has gold or silver backing it. Again, people are at the mercy of lawless plundering schemers by those who make their laws. Our (their) money could be worth nothing in the coming months and years. Times will erode whatever value they have now unless they have the power to use paper currency to buy hard asset to protect the worthless paper money.
