Tycoon’s parents seek bail again

After breaking the conditions of their bail last month, causing public outrage from Prime Minster Hun Sen, the parents of fugitive businessman Thong Sarath are attempting to use their son’s lucrative development company to secure bail for the second time, their lawyer said yesterday.
Thong Chamroeun and Keo Sary hope to use Sarath’s company, Borey 999, as collateral to secure bail, their lawyer, Morm Keosyvin, said yesterday, adding that he is meeting with the couple on Monday to discuss the plan.
“Before, we did not use their assets, but [now] the court does not trust [them] to be released on bail,” Keosyvin said. “They asked me to help them put [parts of] Borey 999 up for bail.”
Keosyvin said the couple was eager to be granted bail because of Chamroeun’s deteriorating health.
Chamroeun and Sary were arrested in December during a manhunt aimed at capturing Sarath, who has since been charged with masterminding the murder of Shimmex Group owner Ung Meng Cheu. Sarath remains at large.

After being granted bail, the couple was arrested while allegedly travelling in an ambulance to Vietnam.
