Kingdom, Japan to ink $220m deal

Cambodia and Japan are set to sign aid and loan agreements next week worth roughly $220 million covering upgrades to the Kingdom’s roads and heath sector, and to Phnom Penh’s electricity grid.
Cambodia’s foreign minister, Hor Namhong, and Japanese Ambassador Yuji Kumamaru will sign the agreements on March 30, according to a Ministry of Foreign Affairs statement released yesterday
The aid component, worth 4.291 billion yen ($35.9 million), will be funnelled into improvements at Svay Rieng Provincial Referral Hospital, the development of a traffic management system in Phnom Penh and the construction and rehabilitation of a small hydropower plant in Ratanakkiri province.

Japan will also provide a concessional loan of 23 billion yen ($192.7 million) for two projects, including the phase two expansion of Phnom Penh’s electrical transmission and distribution system and upgrades to National Road 5 between Battambang and Banteay Meanchey province.
