Cambodian Killing Fields, yesterday and today

It was between 1975 and 1978 the Khmer Rouge took control of Cambodia, evacuated Phnom Penh and began their merciless, ideologically driven, killing. Before they were overthrown three years later, they had executed between 2 and 3 million Cambodians.

The theory called for a farmer led socialist revolution. This ended up meaning that anything that connected one to the “urban elite,” education, commercial or government job, even eyeglasses and in some cases, teeth fillings, put you on the list to be executed.
Society would start over – fresh – from year one with the farmers in control. That was the theory. It was brutal. In fact, a relative few in the new ruling class used the ideology to serve their own self-interests.
Prisons were erected, but soon they were overflowing. The solution? Extermination camps. One of the better know was 15 kilometers outside of the Phnom Penh capitol, at Choeung Ek, once of former Chinese cemetery.
Week after week, month after month, prisoners were transported from the S-21 prison to the camp, an estimated 17,000 in all, including men, women, children and infants.
Bullets were both valuable and scarce; they could not be wasted. So victims were clubbed to death, beaten with wooden mallets, axes and hoes. Some bled to death, their necks cut with the sharp leaves from local palm trees. Executioners took children by the feet and smashed their heads against the trunk of a large tree.

Bodies were then buried in mass graves, some 400 or more in a grave. To ensure certain death the bodies were covered with chemicals, including DDT.
At the end of the Pol Pot era, after Vietnamese soldiers entered Cambodia and overthrew his regime, the gruesome search for survivors and victims began. That’s when Choeung Ek was discovered.
The remains thousands of victims, most who died with hands bound behind their backs and blindfolded, were exhumed. Slowly the unimaginable scale of the atrocity grew and the camp took on the name of “the Killing Fields.”  It became a metaphor for the entire Pol Pot era.
I visited Choeung Ek yesterday. It is a memorial site to human atrocity. Eighty-six gravesites are visible, stretching out over the landscape. Visitors are asked to watch a 15-minute documentary before visiting the graves.
The tree, against which uncounted children’s lives ended, is a particularly chilling site. Memorial cloth bracelets now adorn the tree and rest at its foot.
In the center of the field sits a 17-story glass stupa, which is said to house 8,000 skulls exhumed from the graves. Many are visible through the windows.
Our small group was one among several at the time wandering through the fields. It was an eerily silent experience. The magnitude of what we were encountering was overwhelming; words were simply inadequate and almost inappropriate.
At the ghostly tree, burdened by unconscionable acts of brutality and inhumanity, we stopped to say a few short prayers.
What possible thinking, what ideology, could lead to such genocide, I asked our guide. He explained that once the killing began it was deemed necessary to avoid retribution. Kill or be killed. That’s how some executioners explained their actions after the Pol Pot regime ended and trials began, trials that languished for political reasons as China thwarted UN efforts to form war crime courts.
Pol Pot died in the Cambodian jungle. Few of his henchmen ever were held responsible. Some died in hiding. A handful faced trails and only a few of these faced prison sentences. Even today, with the old regime leaders, in the seventies and eighties, court actions continue to go on. Justice will never be served.
The Killing Field experience was both overwhelming and sobering. It forces one to face the fact that human beings are capable of such atrocities, of such madness.
This realization is made all the worse when one considers such ideological insanity, leading of mass murder and mayhem, continues to this very day, much of it in Iraq and Syria.

The Khmer forum experience was both overwhelming and sobering. It forces one to face the fact that Khmer race is capable of inciting to chop up the Vietnamese with axes and butcher knives, such atrocities, of such madness.

P.S. When I was a teen, I was in a labor team with 3 Cambodians. They told me many horrible stories while we labored under the scorching sun. I was told about the games the Khmer Rouges would play on the victims. They used plastic bags to suffocate the victims, that was, if they did not want to rake the people on the neck.

I cannot imagine a more savage race than the Khmer. Oh yeah, some Khmer blame the Vietnamese agent to dress as Khmer Rouges and killed other Khmers. That's such a stupid blame. The Vietnamese folks are nice people. They will refuse to kill unarmed and defenseless civilians.

I remember as a child, I loved animals. When my mother ordered me to assist in killing the chicken for the family meal, I begged her to let the chicken to live. I was willing to only eat vegie and plain rice to spare the chicken.

Khmer race openly gloat about chopping the Vietnamese up and dumped the bodies into the Mekong river as trophies. I watched a KHmer clip showing how Khmer practiced killing. Some Khmer would dress as Vietnamese and other Khmer will chase, round them up to be chopped. That clip was made during Lon Nol's time.

I say, let's round up the Khmer race and put them into a small island so that they can live out the rest of their lives. They are too dangerous in humanity.

Hey idiot Drgunzet NOT MAJORITY KHMER gloated about killing Vietnamese salvagery. Most of us Khmer are too busy trying to find ways to live through civil war. Most Cambodian were also the victims of Khmer Rough & Khmer Viet Minh. Your Viet Cong infiltrated among Lon Nol's regime, Pol Pot's regime, CPP's regime. There are a lots of Youn's agents still inside Hun Sen armed forces.

I myself and my family wouldn't hurt a fly. My dad served in Lon Nol's Republic army as major. When orders came in mid 70's to round up Vietnamese ethnics to be send back to Vietnam. My dad knew those Vietnamese neighbors lives could be in dangers he alerted those Vietnamese families to run. He saved dozen of Youn's families. So, not all Khmer are killers as you idiot claimed. Most Khmer are peaceful, honest, loving if left alone from your Viet Cong sinister plans. So Fuc off you idiot.

I did not write "MAJORITY KHMER gloated about killing Vietnamese". Do not put the words in to my comments.

I wrote, "Khmer race openly gloat about chopping the Vietnamese up and dumped the bodies into the Mekong river as trophies."

Let me clarify what I wrote. It means:

_ Other races never exhibit such behavior barbaric and evil acts.

_ Alarmingly ALL Khmer forums always have some (a few, about 10 percent?) Khmer posters who kept gloating aboutKhmer race openly gloat about chopping the Vietnamese up and dumped the bodies into the Mekong river as trophies.

_ Further more, other Khmer (the majority, about 90 percent?) did not object to such gloating. Is it a social and culture norm for Khmer to behave as such?

--------
I saw numerous Khmer female student got involved in vicious fist fight. It's horrible and most other Khmer stood around as if it's social and culture norm.

Where I came from, I have never seen any girl gotten into fist fight. It's a social taboo. The light-skinned Asians had a culture, "Girls are not supposed to fight."

One time, there was two girls got into a huge conflict and the guys in my class forced them to fist fight to settle the score. They loved to see a cat fight because it's so rare to see girl fights.

I intervened and declared, "Girl are not supposed to fight." Then I added, "Fighting is the jobs for the guys. I ask for male champions to represent the girls and fight. Fight for the girls, for their causes, for their favor."

I volunteered myself to represent the poor, underfed, small and weak girl. I was the same kind with her. The other girl was well fed, big and tall, pretty. But no rich guy represented her.

You see, at the time, I was a reknown street battle commander. I had a sizable troops loyal to me who could find an excuse to intervene on my half and gang beat any fool opposing me.

I declared the poor smaller girl winner by default. If the girls fought, she would have been crushed.

Light-skinned Asians are vastly superior over the dark-skinned Asians. Vietnamese are light skinned. That is why they are vastly superior over the Khmer.

Drgunzet,

Hey idiot Drgunzet,

Vietnamese are not superior than Khmer or any darker skin Asian. Youns just gotten an excellence leaderships. Khmers haven't able to find their true patriotic leaders since late 17th century. We had bad kings & PM ever since. There many smart and talented Khmers than I had known but they didn't had the killer instincts like those blood thirsty Viet's leaderships. Our Khmer ancestors was 100% that the Viets had thousandths tricks. Youns won many wars because of dirty trickeries with no honor. My dad & father in law always told me that in the 70's fighting at South Vietnam border VC would let him Fuc their wife and daughters just to get intelligents on Lon Nol's troops weak points. Khmer would NEVER resorted shameful selling their family member down to this level to gain upper hands. Those Viets also let American G.I had their ways with their wives & daughters. What a shame cultures. Cambodian rather die than do this thing. I am not suprise at your Viet's cultures you guy had also been letting the French colonials had their ways with your women. "Me love You Long Time" Lol. That's one of the reason that the Fuc French favored Youns and signed over Kampuchea Krom to Viet's emperor Bao Dhiuz. There that the prices your culture paid in order to claimed your lighted skin Viets superior to darker Khmer race.

OH BY THE WAY U.S.A PRESIDENT BARRACK OBAMA WAS AND STILL DARKER SKIN AFRICAN AMERICAN. Your lighted skin iets now are kissing his a__s for protection from the world Super Power People Republic of China. China in the near future will eat your Viets superior powers for snack. Still love America and never wish China & America go to war with each others. As Cambodian I will say Go China against Viets!

Cambodia sent a team to compete in the International Math Olympiad for 3 years. They mostly ranked near the bottom so eventually Cambodia stopped sending any team. Vietnam has been ranking top 10 in the world in the same event, and event ranked 3rd.

Vietnam has many International Grand Master in Chess and captured a number World Champions in Chess for U10 - U18, European Women Chess Champion, Asian Women Chess Champion. Khmer players could not even get a single invite to compete. lol...

Sorry, Khmer race has been creamed repeatedly. Smart genes were wiped out. What's left are ugly and stupid Khmer.

Last year, the entire Cambodian nation could only produced 12 students with grade A in the National exam. That's terrible. Cambodian students were cheating so rampantly, the Cambodian government decided to cracked down. The result was a disaster. Even with an extra round of retest, only 28 percent Cambodian students barely passed the exam.

Years ago, I read articles about students carried knives, axes to the school to butch the teachers if they were not allowed to cheat. The Cambodian students were chasing the teachers in the school like some mass riot. Last year the Cambodian police had to bring guns and armors to the school.

What a barbaric race. Khmer race is finished, reaching its end.

Hey idiot Drgunzet,

This is the last time I will response to low life worm like you. I thought you are smarter but I was wrong. You resorted to name calling instead of arguing your ideas intellectually. I was totally wrong about you. You talked like a little boy. You can response all you wanted but I will erase your bookmark so you will waste your phatetic life time.
