Princess Srirasmi Akrapongpreecha is Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn's third wife
The downfall of Princess Srirasmi, the wife of Thailand's Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn, has been both dramatic and unusually public.
Seven of her relatives have been arrested, and accused of misusing their royal status to amass vast wealth and carry out numerous abuses.
The crown prince himself has now made the disgrace official by ordering her family to stop using the name Akrapongpreecha, which he gave them after he married her in 2001. The king and the crown prince both have this privilege, akin to knighthoods in the UK.
So has Princess Srirasmi lost her royal status?
Interestingly, the crown prince has not revoked her royal title, "Mom", which translates roughly as "princess", nor yet her use of the royal family's name, Mahidol na Ayutthaya.
These are officially bestowed by King Bhumibol Adulyadej, and it would need his approval for them to be revoked. However if, as expected, the crown prince divorces Princess Srirasmi, she will almost certainly lose both titles. The future status of her nine-year-old son by the prince, Dipangkorn, will depend on his father's wishes.
Titles matter a great deal in status-obsessed Thailand, in particular when it comes to those with a claim to the throne.
What does Thai law say about the succession?
The 1924 Palace Succession Law, enshrined in subsequent constitutions, follows the principle of primogeniture, meaning Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn is the designated heir to King Bhumibol, and his own sons should inherit the throne after him, ranked by age.
However, the law also gives reigning kings considerable sway in choosing their own successor - and an amendment to the constitution now allows the possibility of a female successor.
Does the crown prince have any other male children?
The crown prince has four sons by his second marriage, whom he disowned in 1997 when he severed all ties with their mother, Yuvadhida Polpraserth.
At the time the crown prince stated that they had renounced all their royal titles. But the palace continues to recognise their right to use the title HSH, or His Serene Highness, even though the boys, now grown up, are banished from Thailand and live in the United States.
That leaves some doubt over where they sit in line to the throne, even though most commentators believe they are no longer considered possible successors.
It is widely believed that the crown prince may have had another baby boy this year with his current mistress, who is likely to become his next wife.
Why does all this matter so much?
The issue is critical in a country where the monarchy is considered pivotal to political stability, and where King Bhumibol, who turns 87 this week, is in such frail health.
Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn appears to be sorting out his personal affairs before the succession, so that he can choose who will be his queen, and who will eventually succeed him.

This is ridiculous about Thai royal family. I know the history of Khmer Empire and how they (Thai/Siam) came from during and after Mongol Empire chased them (Tai Chinese before the name called as Thai today) and they (Tai Chinese) were destroyed by Mongol in Nanzhaos, a province of China in 12th century. The real history of Khmer Empire have told it all.
They (Tai Chinese) were the refugees flooding into Khmer Empire territory bordered with China because Khmer Empire king accepted them (Tai Chinese refugees) into our Khmer Empire land and the Khmer King and warriors (including Khmer people) helped/provided them (Tai Chinese refugees) with food, shelters, and helped train them (Tai Chinese refugees) to protect themselves, etc. After 400 years later from 12th century, they (Tai Chinese refugees) became stronger and then they (Tai Chinese folks) robbed Khmer Kings, Khmer Warriors, Khmer people during the night time, stole everything from Khmer Angkor Wat and Complex, destroy Angkor Wat and Angkor Complex, killed Khmer people who helped them (Tai Chinese refugees), took Khmer warriors and people with them (Tai Chinese folks/Siam). Tai Chinese folks (today Thai) were so ungrateful for Khmer Kings, Khmer Warriors and Khmer people who provided them with foods, training and educations, and so on.
Wonder why they (Thai/Tai Chinese refugees) were so disgraceful and violent and beyond.
Laos were the hill tribes (from China) and they were loyal to Khmer Empire kings and the Khmer King help them (Laos/Hill Tribes) with lots of supports more than Tai Chinese, by helping them (Laos/Hill Tribes) to create new language of Laos before Tai Chinese/Thai stole or took from Laos written language. Laos people are very honest and loyal to Khmer kings, warriors, and people.
It is very sad to see all these happened on the planet. Khmer Empire Kings, Warriors and Khmer people were not aware of these happened when it comes to violent Siam (Thai or Tai Chinese from Nanzhaos, a Chinese province).
It is a very long history.
Those Thai kings and royal family are not real, but just thieves who robbed, killed, destroyed our Khmer Empire Kings, Khmer Warriors, and Khmer people during the night invasions when everyone were sleeping.

See, just read the Khmer comments. They don't have any respect toward the women. They just view the women as some sex objects.

This is why Vietnamese men must protect the Cambodian women from the Khmer guys.
One time, I was working in the Silicon valley, USA and was invited to hang out on Friday evening at a groupie. There was a surprised birth-day party and this one Asian dude claimed, "By tradition, the birthday boy always gets one wish to come true." He wished to kiss this very attractive gal on the lips.
She giggled and declined. But the guy insisted. After a few minutes of horse play, he and his cronies were surrounding her, pressing her against the table so that he can plant a kiss on her.
I intervened and asked them to stop and these Khmer-like Asians dude got very aggressive, hostile wanting to provoke a fist fight with me. They were lucky, because I would not hesitate in destroying 1 million Khmer dudes to save one woman from being violated. Khmer lives are worthless to me.
I asked the girl to confirmed, "Miss, are you being uncomfortable? Would you like them to stop?" She meekly replied, "Yes."
But these Khmer-like Asian dudes would exclaimed, "She lied. She wants us. You are trying to woo her and steal her from us."
Khmer kept writing about Vietnamese stole this and that, but the truth is: the local people don't want to be with the Khmer, they want to be with the Vietnamese. The Khmer folks living in Vietnam did not have to suffer the Cambodian genocide. Oh my God, just look at the ten thousand skulls and human bones stacked high in displays.
No Khmer in the right mind would want to be associate with the other Khmer. Just ask Tony Jaa. He did not want to associate with the Khmer.
