PHNOM PENH, (Khmer Times) -- The Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) has denounced the authorities of Oddar Meanchey province for allowing villagers to ban them from holding a public forum and confiscating some important equipment.
CNRP lawmaker-elect Mr. Pol Ham said, “Those people took our 5 ipads, 8 phones and some equipment from my car. Then they told us to go back and that they will give the equipment to the district authority.”
He added that they had been blocked by soldiers, not villagers and that they will charge the authorities with robbery if the equipment is not returned.
Mr. Tim Sarath, deputy governor of Anlong Veng district, said, “We only heard about the equipment being taken on social media. We are investigating the legitimacy of the allegations; we cannot charge someone without evidence.”
On June 8, 2014, CNRP President Sam Rainsy and Vice-President Kem Sokha went to Oddar Meanchey’s Anlong Veng district to hold a public forum at the home of Mr. Nhem En, the former district deputy governor who recently joined the CNRP.
The region was the last Khmer Rouge outpost to have integrated with the Royal Government of Cambodia and many villagers barred the representatives of the CNRP by blocking their cars.
Mr. Sokha said, “They are Khmer Rouge and they are communist. They changed their uniforms from soldier to civilian and threatened our lives. The Cambodia People’s Party is trying to avoid reforms and is not maintaining order.”
In response, Mr. Sarath said, “We deny the accusations of the CNRP leaders. They are not soldiers; they are villagers who live in Anlong Veng district. [The CNRP representatives] were banned because they did not satisfy the activities of opposition party leaders.”
