How has a small Vietnam become a dominant power over Indochina today?

Emperor Le Dai Hanh
Vietnam is a small nation that originated from a place called Xich Quy about 2500 BC, currently around Guangxi and Guandong provinces of Southern China.  Through its long rough history, Vietnam has at least 20 different names starting from some familiar names such as Dai Co Viet, Dai Viet, Nam Viet, and Vietnam from a reign of Emperor Gia Long (Nguyen Phu Anh) until today.  Though Vietnam had gone through numerous and prolong wars, every time it had happened, Vietnam emerged as a stronger nation.  Today, Vietnam has become the dominated power over Indochina, and based on its historic evolution and steady expansion, it's more likely to expand its border beyond Indochina in long future.  Starting from around 10th century, after independent from China suzerainty over 1000 years, Emperor Le Dai Hanh started expansion southward to Champa and Kampuchea Krom, and the emperor's legacy was continued by Ho Chi Minh, known as "journey toward the west."  Now we should look into some factors that make such a small nation to be the dominant power in Indochina and the region.
Under Chinese suzerainty over 1,000 years, the Vietnamese  had learned war tactics and adapted themselves to fight their much larger enemies--Chinese and Mongol dynasties, France, and the US.  Vietnam long history has revealed some patterns of war tactics that the Vietnamese had deployed against their enemies--avoid  being caught alive, trick enemies and ambush, and preemptive strikes.  These tactics had been used for generations from the common era through the Vietnam War Era. In around 40-43 AD, Queen Trung Nu Vuong led revolt against Han Dynasty rule but failed, then she committed suicide. In 225 AD, Lady Trieu Thi Trinh led another revolt but failed again, then she committed suicide by throwing herself into the river rather than being caught alive.  And in 1841, General Truong Minh Giang committed suicide by poisoning himself when his military campaign failed in Cambodia.

Another common tactic is to lure the mighty enemies into their disadvantageous positions and counterattack or ambush them. Emperor Le Dai Hanh facing his mighty enemies-- the Song dynasty's troops--he tricked the advanced Song troops into a dead valley and ambushed them, killing their commander and defeating them in 981.  In 1284-88, the Tran dynasty facing imminent invasion from Mongol army, under Mongke Khan and Kublai Khan, the Tran army avoided the open field battle with the Mongol army, but they had lured the enemies into their disadvantageous positions: swampland and tropical forests and counterattacked them in guerrila tactics to defeat them.  Such a style of warfare was well practiced during the Vietnam War from 1964-75 against the US troops and their allies.  Most American troops were killed by ambushes and explosive traps more than open field battle.

In conventional warfare, the Vietnamese like to use preemptive strike or surprised  attack when the enemies were not in battle readiness.  In 1418, Le Loi, a commander of Lam Son armies, launched a preemptive strike against the Ming dynasty troops, killing 300,000 of them and thwarted them completely.  This tactic was also being used during the French war and the Vietnam War; in 1954, the Vietminh launched a surprised attack on French base at Dian Bien phu where the whole French troops surrendered and brought an end to the war. In 1968, the Vietcong troops simultaneously launched a surprised attack on all the US army positions across the country on the Vietnamese New Year Eve known as a "Tet Offensive."   Such a preemptive strike made the US troops more nervous and confused since they could not use air support and heavy weapons against the Vietcong infiltrators in close ranges. Albeit both sides suffered the heavy loss, the Vietcong had made Americans psychologically felt intimidated by the power of the their underestimated enemies. Since then, the US military advance had been hailed, and the war fell into a stalemate that forced the US to withdraw its entire troops from Vietnam in 1973 before the collapse of its ally regime in 1975.

The Vietnamese invasion in Cambodia 1979 was well-designed and employed different tactics. As Cambodian army much smaller and weaker, Hanoi launched a surprised and overwhelmed attack akin to Hitler attacked Poland in 1939,  rolling advanced columns from multiple directions simultaneously to deprive the enemies from reinforcement and to break their morale.  The goal is to reach a super target--the capital city Phnom Penh, the command center--then spread their advanced columns toward different provincial towns.  Battambang City was under the Vietnamese control on January 13 but most areas in the province were still under the Khmer Rouge control until the Khmer new Year.  After conquering the country, the Vietnamese troops were well entrenched themselves in the fortified positions across the country, especially on the western part since most Khmer resistance forces concentrated on that area.  It is quite different nature of war from 1970s war when Khmer Rouge had seized nearly 70 percent of the country, but during the Vietnamese occupation 1979-89 war, the Khmer Rouge and the other resistance forces retained control the country less than 5 percent mostly along Thai-Cambodia border.

Vietnam's steady growth of territory and power from tiny nation state to dominant power over Indochina has strongly alarmed its smaller neighbors, especially Cambodia which had already lost more than one third of its territory (Kampuchea Krom) to Vietnam in 19th century, and currently it still has struggled to liberate itself from Vietnam's political and economic control.  In the past Vietnam had deployed its war tactics to defeat its bigger enemies and to conquer its neighbors.  Now, Vietnam has deployed its economic and political tactics to conquer proper Cambodia through economic concession and political interference.

I had seen thousands of young Vietcong ,who were sent to fight in our country from 1970-73,captured by Republican soldiers in many battle fields, they were frighten to fight in our country, their eyes telling me that they were not warriors nor enjoyed fighting. Many of them were forced by their superior to fight, they could not return or run away from their units as their consequences is death if they returned or ran away. Many of them were tied up to their sub-machine guns in the battlefields to fight with our soldiers, thousands of them were killed in our country from 1970 -73.In almost every battle Vietcong got 6-7 times more casualties than our troops did, perhaps because we were a better fighter than them. I suppose, when they fight in our country, they were not very good in retreating/withdrawing like in their own country. Many admitted that they preferred to fight with American than with our Khmer soldiers, because we were not afraid of them. We hunted them like hunting rabbits. Most of the Vietcong are slim and pale and frighten. Recently, Hun Sen had brain-washed our people to believe that Hanoi's troops are a better fighters, which is contras from what I had learned through my experiences in my life. If one want to know the truth one should ask any Lon Nol soldier they will tell you about their true experiences in battle field with Hanoi's troops.

The reason that we lost the war not because we were scare of Vietcong, but we were abandoned by our allies,America, and also we did not have strategy in both national and international and so did American friend, they did not know much about Vietnam, even its population and by 1973-74 American people at home were tired with war and force Nixon to give up the war in Vietnam, where as Gen. Giap later admitted that at the same year, he lost his hope and believe that he would lose the war, because there were no more energy left to fight.

War is a complex strategy. Hanoi's strategy is using on us is to divide and conquer, which require time and prolong biting strategy/mechanism.

But sometime one could win the battle but later would lose the war like the USSR. Talking about that it makes me remember the fact about the communist empire of USSR that collapsed in 1989,which even the CIA did not know anything about it and in the same year the CIA were still preparing and sending weapons-stockpile to Thailand ,because the CIA were still thinking that the communist would advance further into Thailand and probably the rest of Asia.

To have a strong and fit nation, we better prepare, as war is always a constant rhythm of change. As one of the world best known Chinese warrior Sun Tzu,in the fifth century BC wrote that:” In peace prepare for war, in war prepare for peace.”

This was written incorrectly in the article, "in 1954, the Vietminh launched a surprised attack on French base at Dian Bien phu where the whole French troops surrendered and brought an end to the war."

The French commander was tired of the guerrilla hit&run attacks from Vietminh, he created Dien Bien Phu as a trap to bait Vietnam into a pitched open battle. The French planned to destroyed Vietnam with their superior artillery and air force.

The reason Vietminh won the war was their ability to do the what the French thought impossible. That was Vietnam managed to have heavy artillery deployed at such desolated area.

Once Vietnam was able to use artillery, they shut out both French artillery and air force. When it devolved to pure infantry, the Vietminh had overwhelming number, thus they overwhelmed the French.

Please Khmer folks, you folks have much to learn or you continue to lose. Let me show my hands and demonstrate my German superiority here.

1. When I was a teenager, I led light-skinned kids to battle against dark-skinned kids. My first battle debut, I had 10 small and weak light-skinned kids. My battle group was about to be attacked by 20 much bigger, stronger dark-skinned kids.

The force discrepancy was (10 x 1 strength vs 20 x 3 strength). But I prevailed and drew so much blood from my enemy. How did I do that? I am willing to show hands so that you folks realize there are superior people in the world than you.

2. I went to high school in America. After I was taught with chess for a couple games and captured 6th place in the state, I was presented with a problem. My chess coach had 3 teams competing in the league. The third C-team was the board numbered 11-15 and had lost 6 matches in a rows against other schools who sent only one team, their best board number 1-5.

When I took over the C-team (became board number 11 myself), I managed to secured 6 victories in a row to bring the score back to 6 win, 6 loss. The city chess league got very upset at my doing.

How did I turn a round an inferior team to beat other superior team? I had superior German leadership. Again, why don't you folks think a bit before I disclose what I did.

P.S. Do not forget, years ago, Mr. Hun Sen only had a budget of 150 million US dollars. How did he successfully confront Thai army which had a budget of 5 billion US dollars. Would you say Mr. Hun Sen is a military genius in his own right?

I was born premature, underfed, malnourished for much of my childhood. Most kids had the strength of 2 or 3 times as strong as I was. Yet, when I decided to fight back, I became one of the top fighter on the street. I used my brain and superior tactics.

-Drgunzet-

P.S. Because of my horrible beginning, later on when the Whites fed me well, I became a true superior fighter. My brain wiring was max out for martial arts when I was very weak, when I became well fed, I estimate I can easily crush another Asian in a few seconds. My snapping speed and reflex was unmatched in my area.

Quoted from the article, "Hanoi launched a surprised and overwhelmed attack akin to Hitler attacked Poland in 1939."

That was totally wrong. The German wehrmacht did the two prongs attacks, left and right, then encircled the enemy in a kettle. Once the supply and communication cut, the enemy got reduced in a systematical manner.

It was called The Kesselschlacht, ("cauldron battle") tactic, part of the Blitzkrieg strategy.

Now, the Vietnamese did the opposite. They did the blossoming Lotus attack. They attacked and destroyed the few central commands, thus caused a complete paralyzed in the files and ranks of the Khmer Rouges.

No Khmer Rouge commander dared to make any initiative under or face punishment of death. But they waited for the orders from central command, which was already destroyed.

Then the Vietnamese systematically mopped up the isolated,
uncoordinated Khmer Rouge pockets of resistances. The KR soldiers stayed and waited for the command as long as they could till the Vietnamese troops came so close. This was why the S-21 notorious prison was captured mostly intact.

I watched a documentary clip showing the Vietnamese captured Phnom Penh air port with all the the ammo, weapons in intact crates from China in the thousands!

I used to lead the kids on street battles, so war was in my blood. I read so many books in warfare, military science, military history. The article in this thread is very inaccurate.

I came across many youtube clips showing the Khmer in Vietnam are doing just fine. Do not cause trouble for those good folks.

Do not try to impose Pol Pot genocidal style on those good folks. I read numerous posts before, those folks prefer to be Vietnam citizens.

Quoted from the article "the Vietcong had made Americans psychologically felt intimidated by the power of the their underestimated enemies."

Wrong again. Americans were never intimidated by Vietcong. The "Tet" offensive was to discredit American military commander in Vietnam, then use American people against the American military.

Vietcong duped the American commanders into thinking they achieved great victories battles after battles. Thus they issued reports, press releases to boast their success. Then the attack came to make such claims appeared as either out-right lies, or foolish claims.

From that point on, no American general wants to be the commander in Vietnam. It's a cannot-win situation. Withdraw was the only option after so much anti-war protest. Once the American withdraw, the South Vietnam was easy meat.
