Cambodia says it is going to challenge Thai rice sales in the United States now dominated by the popular jasmine rice.
Song Saran, CEO of Amru Rice Cambodia, told a recent seminar on International Export Market Research for Cambodian Rice, that he was confident about Cambodia's fragrant rice competing with the Thai product in the US.
''We are going to [export] to the US, of course, 100%, because the US is a very big market and has potential for Cambodia,'' the Phnom Penh Post quoted him as saying.
Cambodia's rice exports to the US last year were only 1,780 tonnes out of 379,000 tonnes of its total exports. The US was 26th out of 66 destinations for its rice, according to Cambodian government figures.
Amru is one of the largest rice exporting firms in Cambodia.
