PHNOM PENH (The Cambodia Herald) – Prime Minister Hun Sen on Tuesday said it would be impossible to double the garment workers from USD 80 to USD 160 even though he wish to see them to have better life.
“Which leaders and Prime Ministers don’t want to see their peoples have good and high standard of living,”,
Hun Sen said at the ground-breaking ceremony of Chrey Thom-Long Binh Bridge in Kandal province.
Hun Sen, who attended the ceremony with Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, said the salaries of Cambodian workers are higher than those of workers in India, Bangladesh, Myanmar, and Laos, and as high as the minimum wage in Vietnam.
He also appealed to opposition leaders to stop inciting protest to demand wage be raised to $160 per month for workers as “it is impossible”.
The Cambodian government announced recently decided that the minimum wage for garment and footwear factory workers would be raised from $80 to $100 per month starting from February this year.
However, the labor unions asked for USD 160, pressing their demand through street protests and blockage of streests which led to deadly clashes, killing five people.
The garment sector in Cambodia generates over $4 billion every year in exports, and employs around 600,000 workers.

It is just a matter of time, everyone will know Rainsy encouraged the workers to strike for the $160 rate. And the $160 rate means the massive job loss to India, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Laos and Vietnam.
Is Rainsy stupid not knowing about this, even with his MBA? Of course he knows, but he was evil such that he was inciting people to strike for his political gain.
-------------
If I am the Union leader, I will quickly accept the $100 rate, then go about improving the condition for my workerbees by:
1. Squeeze the food supplier for better food.
2. Demand better working condition such as better ventilation, reduce chemical toxin, exercise Taichi every 2 hours for 10 minutes.
3. Protect my workers who are mostly women from being raped by Khmer men. I will from tough guy squads in each factory to combat against other evil Khmer men.
4. Improve my workerbees' skills and talents, then solicit other factories for defection to higher salaries.
5. Contact other countries' garment unions and suggest them to strike for higher salaries. Then strike again when other countries have higher salaries.
6. Make sure my workerbees are away from any political conflicts. I only strike for wage increase, not about anti-government. In fact, I rather go against the factories than the government.
Striking for $160 minimum rate is against the government. Even if I accept the $100 rate, there is nothing to forbid me from striking against the factories for a higher pay over the minimum rate.

P.S. I really hope Mr. Hun Sen can nail any corrupted Union guys who colluded with the political protest.
