CLEC - EC - CCHR Media Alert - CLEC Equitable Cambodia, and CCHR to host a Discussion Platform on "Land Issues after the 2013 Parliamentary Election and Recommendations"

MEDIA ALERT – Phnom Penh, 9 December 2013

CLEC, Equitable Cambodia, and CCHR will be hosting a Discussion Platform on “Land Issues after the 2013 Parliamentary Election and Recommendations”

On 12 December 2013,  Community Legal Education Center (CLEC), Equitable Cambodia (EC), and Cambodian Center for Human Rights (CCHR) will host a discussion on “Land Issues after the 2013 Parliamentary Election and Recommendations.” This platform is designed to provide an opportunity for civil society organizations, affected communities, and political parties to engage in discussions about the state of land rights in Cambodia in the aftermath of the July 2013 parliamentary election and to work on recommendations for the future.

The prevalence of land conflicts appeared to be decreasing prior to the 28 July 2013 National Assembly elections. However, only a few days after the election incidents of land grabing were widely reported by the media and by adversely affected communities, marking a worrying increase in land-related conflicts. A farmer in Oddar Meanchey province, for example, had his property and cassava crops destroyed by military personnel, allegedly to make way  for military base development. At the same time, 40 villagers in Preah Vihear were threatened with eviction by their village chief as retaliation for voting for the opposition.

The platform on “Land Issues after the 2013 Parliamentary Election and Recommendation” aims to promote a constructive discussion between adveresely affected communities and individuals, civil society organizations, independent analysts, and representatives of political parties. The platform will allow representatives from the Cambodian Peoples’ Party (CPP) and the Cambodian National Rescue Party (CNRP) to present and share their strategies for resolving existing land conflicts. The meeting organizers will also disseminate ideasregarding the planned land policy reform and will collect input from platform participants for inclusion in a follow-up “policy brief” with recommendations to the political parties on how to improve the land rights situation in Cambodia. During the discussion, CCHR will also launch its latest report examining land conflicts in Cambodia: “Cambodia: Land in Conflict: An Overview of the Land Situation.”  The report will also be available on CCHR’s website at www.cchrcambodia.org
