Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi vowed Wednesday, while visiting
Cambodia three weeks after a general election that both the ruling and
opposition parties claim to have won, to support whatever measures its
government takes to ensure stability and offered to help "prevent any
disturbance from outside."
Wang, who arrived in Cambodia on Tuesday for a two-day visit,
made the remarks in a joint press conference with his Cambodian
counterpart Hor Namhong in Phnom Penh.
He said China "fully supports any measure taken by the Royal
Government of Cambodia in order to secure stability, economic
development and peace."
"China will continue to firmly support Cambodia in preventing any disturbance from outside," he added without elaborating.
Wang also congratulated the Cambodian People's Party of Prime
Minister Hun Sen on its victory in last month's general election and
expressed hope that the country's political parties will settle their
differences peacefully.
The opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party, led by Sam
Rainsy, has rejected the official results of the July 28 election, which
show the CPP has won 68 seats in the 123-seat National Assembly, while
the CNRP has won 55.
Alleging the election was rigged, the CNRP has appealed to the
international community not to recognize the results and has threatened
to stage mass demonstrations across the country.
The Chinese foreign minister also held a meeting with Hun Sen on
Wednesday, during which both sides agreed to strengthen bilateral
relations. Wang invited him to visit China early next month to attend
the 10th China-ASEAN Expo in Nanning and meet with Chinese Premier Li
Keqiang.
