Cambodian opposition chief home to face standoff

Published: Thursday, Aug. 15, 2013
Cambodia's opposition leader returned from abroad Friday to lead his party's challenge to last month's election results.
Cambodia National Rescue Party leader Sam Rainsy's return from the United States could accelerate resolution of the country's political standoff, which many fear may lead to violent confrontations.
The opposition has threatened to hold a mass demonstration if an impartial committee does not resolve complaints over alleged massive election irregularities. Prime Minister Hun Sen's government responded by deploying troops and armored vehicles into the capital to keep order.
The official election results support the claim of Hun Sen's Cambodian People's Party to have won have won 68 of the 123 seats in the National Assembly. Ratification of the results will not take place until sometime before Sept. 8.
