It’s the rights of US to help or not: Minister Hor Namhong លោកហោ ណាំហុង៖ សហរដ្ឋអាមេរិក ជួយ ឬមិនជួយ វាជាសិទ្ធរបស់អាមេរិក

PHNOM PENH (The Cambodia Herald) -- Cambodia’s Foreign Minister Hor Namhong on Wednesday has said that it's within the rights of the United States if they want to help or not help Cambodia, but Cambodia also has its own rights to the decision.

“It's within the rights of the U.S. and their affairs in helping or not helping Cambodia, but Cambodia is an independent state," he said.

Hor Namhong, Deputy Prime Minister, made the statement a day after U.S. lawmakers held a subcommittee hearing Tuesday on the looming political and social issues in Cambodia.

In the hearing, lawmakers called on the U.S. to cut aid of more than $70 million to Cambodia unless Prime Minister Hun Sen allows a free election later this month.

Opposition party leader Sam Rainsy has recently vowed to return to the country to lead the National Rescue Party’s campaign ahead of the election, but will face imprisonment if he returns.

Rainsy has been living in exile since 2009 after he was sentenced in absentia to 12 years in prison for series of criminal charges which included uprooting of border post, publishing false maps and disinformation.

When asked if the US aid cuts is a form of pressure regarding the case with Sam Rainsy, Hor Namhong said whatever excuses the U.S. uses, it's within their right.
