PHNOM PENH (The Cambodia Herald) -- National Rescue
Party (NRP) acting president Kem Sokha said Wednesday that he appealed
to the government to take immediate action to prevent any protests
against him when he meets local citizens during his election campaign.
Sokha’s appeal was made at a news conference at NRP headquarters in the district of Toul Kork. [Kem Sokha's appeal came one day after a group of CPP supporters, who appeared to be orgainsed by the ruling CPP, have disturbed his public forum, blocking his vehicle from leaving, causing a security concern].
This
past Sunday, Chhum Mey, Tuol Sleng prison survivor, led a protest
against Kem Sokha, demanding him make a public apology to spirits of the
dead who were killed by the Khmer Rouge.
The prison saw at least 13,000 people being tortured and then executed from 1975-1979.
In
the news conference, Kem Sokha considered the protests against him as
bothersome, asking the government to take measures to prevent further
protests, or it will cause political and social instability and affect
July’s election process.
