PERSONAL REFLECTION ON THE MIRACLE OF TECHNOLOGY AND THE GIFT OF UBIQUITY

I am coming to the end of a fascinating one-month visit to North America (U.S.A. and Canada).
Earlier this week I
was still in Washington D.C. for a series of meetings with U.S. leaders
from Congress, the White House and the State Department, conferences at
the Wilson Center and the Foreign Service Institute, press interviews
with AFP, VOA and RFA and meetings with the IRI, the NDI, U.S. lawyers
and the Cambodian community.
Though I was almost 20,000 kilometers away from my
home country I felt that I had never been so close to Cambodia and the
Khmer people. Between meetings at Congress and the State Department, I
was able to participate live by teleconference in a meeting of 2,000
villagers at Bati district in Takeo province in the heart of Cambodia.
Then, between a conference at the Wilson Center and an interview with
VOA, I produced and posted a video clip on my Facebook page where my
message to Cambodian civil servants and workers about their salaries was
viewed by more than 170,000 people living in Cambodia in the space of

Such close contact with so many Cambodians in such a short time would not have been possible only a few years ago.
The miracle of technology gives us the gift of ubiquity.

J’arrive
aujourd’hui au terme d’une visite d’un mois en Amérique du Nord
(Etats-Unis et Canada) qui aura été l’une des plus passionnantes.
Au
début de cette semaine j’étais encore à Washington D.C. pour une série
de rendez-vous avec des dirigeants américains (Congrès, Maison Blanche,
Département d’Etat), de conférences (Wilson Center, Foreign Service
Institute), d’interviews avec la presse (AFP, VOA, RFA) et de rencontres
diverses (IRI, NDI, avocats américains, communauté cambodgienne).
Bien
que me trouvant géographiquement à presque 20.000 km de mon pays natal
je n’ai jamais été aussi intensément proche du Cambodge et du peuple
khmer. En effet, entre un rendez-vous au Congrès et une visite au
Département d’Etat, j’ai participé en direct et de manière la plus
vivante, par téléconférence, à un meeting réunissant quelque 2.000
villageois dans le district de Bati, province de Takeo, en plein cœur du
Cambodge. Puis, entre une conférence au Wilson Center et une interview
avec VOA, j’ai produit et posté un vidéo-clip sur ma page Facebook où
mon message adressé aux fonctionnaires et ouvriers cambodgiens à propos
de leurs salaires a été visionné, en l’espace de 48 heures, par plus de

Il
y a seulement quelques années, jamais mon cœur n’aurait pu battre à
l’unisson avec celui de tant de Cambodgiens en une période de temps
aussi courte.
C’est cela le miracle de la technologie. Celle-ci nous donne vraiment le don d’ubiquité!
