PHNOM PENH (The Cambodia Herald) -- Cambodia’s
Foreign Minister Hor Namhong returned Monday morning from Hague’s
International Court of Justice after a grueling legal battle with
Thailand that lasted four days.
At Phnom Penh International Ariport, he told reporters what the Cambodian delegation had faced with Thailand over the area around the Preah Vihear Temple (Pra Viharn).
"A week ago, we faced Thailand over the vicinity surrounding the Preah Vihear Temple not about the temple," he said. "Thailand agreed that Preah Vihear Temple belongs to Cambodia."
In an interview to local and international reporters after his arrival in Phnom Penh International Airport on Monday, he said, "the problem is about the surrounding area around Preah Vihear Temple and Cambodia called for the Hague’s International Court of Justice for an interpretation of the verdict in 1962.
"There was no argument over the meaning of the verdict in 1962, but we still have an argument since then, after Thailand had unilaterally and illegally installed wire fences not far from the front of Preah Vihear Temple in June of that same year," he added.
"Thailand took many maps to present, such as maps of water divisions but it was rejected by the court."
Hor Namhong said, there have been no clear date over when the interpretation of the verdict would be given, but he thought it would be made at the end of this year.
Cambodia is waiting for the interpretation because they had clearly explained their side to the court.
"While confronting the ICJ, Thailand had shown their naughty behavior by showing again and again, the map of the water division and they accused Cambodia without any merit," he added.
"Cambodia's Prime Minister Hun Sen and Thai's Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra said the two nations would be silent and work cooperatively following whatever the court’s decision may be."
