The 24 year-old was said to be riding on a moped with a friend when they
collided with a car in the popular tourist seaside town of Sihanoukville, in
the country’s south.
It is understood the plasterer, who was known as Tomi, died instantly while
his friend was rushed to hospital in the capital, Phnom Penh, about 114
miles north east, with life threatening injuries.
He and his friend had earlier travelled through Thailand as they enjoyed the
warmer weather and beautiful local beaches.
The friend, who has not been named, was believed to be intensive care tonight
following Monday’s accident.
Unconfirmed reports have suggested the driver of the car may have fled the
scene and was being hunted by police.
His family, including his 43 year-old Croatian-born father, Tomislav - known
as Tom - mother Wendy, 44, and younger brother Zak, travelled from Britain
yesterday.
Officials from the local British consulate are supporting the family, from Failsworth, Greater Manchester, as they attempt to establish how he died and collect his body.
Friends tonight paid tribute to Mr Mrcela, who they said had developed a passion for travel and used his job to fund several trips in recent years.
“He was a great lad, he really was such a lovely guy,” one friend, who declined to be named, told The Daily Telegraph.
“He loved his travel. He would work for a few months to then go travelling to different parts of the world.
“He had a great love for life. He created new paths for all his friends to follow.”
Other friends took to social networking sites to post pictures, tributes and video messages, with many expressing their shock at the accident.
Tonight, a Foreign Office spokesman said: “We are aware of the death of a British national in Cambodia on February 4th.
“We are providing consular assistance to his family at this difficult time.”
The port city area, located on the Gulf of Thailand, is popular with tourists, with its white-sand beaches, undeveloped tropical islands and beach resorts.
A spokesman for the local police was unavailable for comment.
