PHNOM PENH (The Cambodia Herald) -- A senior US official met with civil society activists and opposition leaders as well as Foreign Minister Hor Namhong during his one-day visit to Cambodia on Tuesday.

In a statement, the State Department said that Michael Posner, assistant secretary for democracy, human rights, and labor, also met with a representative of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.

"His discussions focused on promoting electoral reform, resolving land rights disputes, and harassment and detainment of activists while stressing the United States commitment to the Cambodian people’s right to a government that reflects their goals and desires," the statement said.

A senior Cambodian official said earlier that Hor Namhong had rejected Posner's request for radio station owner Mam Sonando and opposition leader Sam Rainsy to be pardoned.

Mam Sonando has been sentenced to 15 years for secession while Sam Rainsy has been sentenced in absentia to 12 years for uprooting markers along the Vietnam border, forgery and disinformation. He is believed to be living in France.
