Were Khmer Krom and Kampuchea Krom fabricated by Sihanouk?

Compiled by Khmerization
8th September 2012

After there are debates raging between a Vietnamese blogger and readers of Khmerization blog about the existence or the non-existence of Khmer Krom and Kampuchea Krom, I decided to compile a brief history of Khmer Krom and Kampuchea Krom territory to clarify the issue.
According to the Vietnamese blogger, Khmer Krom and Kampuchea Krom was a fabrication of Sihanouk in order to “shamefully and illegally” claim land that does not belong to Cambodia. Further, he said that the Khmer Krom people were not the original inhabitants of Kampuchea Krom territory, but immigrants who sought refuge in that area and that the Vietnamese took pity on them and allowed them to live peacefully.
According to my searches, history has shown the opposite- that Khmer Krom were the original inhabitants of the area since the 1st century as is evident by the archaeological sites which spread throughout the region, such as Oc Eo (O’Keo) and Khmer temples which dated back to the 5th century, older than Angkor Wat and Preah Vihear temple. On the contrary, history has shown that it was the Vietnamese who invaded the region, starting from the 1600s after King Chey Chettha II, who married a Vietnamese princess, took pity on one faction of the Vietnamese who lost the war with another faction of the Vietnamese and allowed them to settle in the area. Please read the history below:

The History of Kampuchea Krom

Origins

The Khmer Krom are ethnic Khmer who inhabit Kampuchea Krom, an area in southern Vietnam that was once part of the Khmer Empire.[3]
According to Vietnamese government figures (1999 census), there are 1,055,174 Khmer Krom in Vietnam.

The Khmer Empire (AD 802–1431) at its height, approximately 1100 A.D.
The Khmer Empire at its height in 1100 A.D.; the capital is at Angkor Wat.

As we can see, the Khmer Empire (AD 802-1431) extended to Burma in the west, to China in the north, to Champa in the east and to Malaysia to the south. Dai Viet (Vietnam) was confined to only a small area on the Chinese border. The Khmer Empire was not confined to a tiny area near Angkor Wat as claimed by the so-called Vietnamese scholars.

History

Main article: History of Cambodia
Beginning in the early 17th century, colonization of the area by Vietnamese settlers gradually isolated the Khmer of the Mekong Delta from their brethren in Cambodia proper and resulted in their becoming a minority in the delta.
Prey Nokor was the most important commercial seaport to the Khmers. It began as a small fishing village, and was inhabited by Khmer people for centuries before the arrival of the Vietnamese. The city's name was changed by Vietnam to Sài Gòn and then Hồ Chí Minh City. The loss of the city prevented the Cambodians from access to the South China Sea. Subsequently, the Khmers' access to the sea was now limited to the Gulf of Thailand. The area that Saigon/Hồ Chí Minh City now occupies was originally swampland.
In 1623, King Chey Chettha II of Cambodia (1618–1628) allowed Vietnamese refugees fleeing the Trịnh-Nguyễn War in Vietnam to settle in the area of Prey Nokor, and to set up a custom house at Prey Nokor. Increasing waves of Vietnamese settlers, which the Cambodian kingdom, weakened because of war with Thailand, could not impede, slowly Vietnamized the area. In time, Prey Nokor became known as Saigon. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Khmer_Krom
In 1698, Nguyễn Hữu Cảnh, a Vietnamese noble, was sent by the Nguyễn rulers of Huế to establish Vietnamese administrative structures in the area, thus detaching the area from Cambodia, which was not strong enough to intervene. Since 1698, the area has been firmly under Vietnamese administration. The Vietnamese became the majority population in most places[citation needed].
In 1757, the Vietnamese colonized the provinces of Psar Dèk (renamed Sa Đéc in Vietnamese) and Moat Chrouk (Vietnamized to Châu Đốc)
In 1802 Nguyễn Ánh crowned himself emperor Gia Long and had unified all territories which are now modern Vietnam, including the Khmer Krom territory.

The History of Ho Chi Minh  or Prey Nokor City

Ho Chi Minh City (Thành ph H Chí Minh; About this sound listen), formerly named Saigon (Sài Gòn; About this sound listen), is the largest city in Vietnam. It was once known as Prey Nokor, an important Khmer sea port prior to annexation by the Vietnamese in the 17th century.

Etymology

Sài Gòn

An etymology of Sài Gòn is that Sài is a Chinese loanword (Chinese: , pronounced chái in Mandarin) meaning “firewood, lops, twigs; palisade”, while Gòn is another Chinese loanword (Chinese: , pronounced gùn in Mandarin) meaning “stick, pole, bole”, and whose meaning evolved into “cotton” in Vietnamese (bông gòn, literally “cotton stick”, i.e., “cotton plant”, then shortened to gòn). This name may refer to the many kapok plants that the Khmer people had planted around Prey Nokor, and which can still be seen at Cây Mai temple and surrounding areas. It may also refer to the dense and tall forest that once existed around the city, a forest to which the Khmer name, Prey Nokor, already referred.[10]

Prey Nokor written in Khmer.
Other proposed etymologies draw parallels from Tai-Ngon ( ), the Cantonese name of Cholon, which means "embankment" (French: quais),[nb 3] and Vietnamese Sai Côn, a translation of the Khmer Prey Nokor (Khmer: ព្រៃនគរ). Prey means forest or jungle, and nokor is a Khmer word of Sanskrit origin meaning city or kingdom—thus, "forest city" or "forest kingdom".[nb 4]

Early history

Ho Chi Minh City began as a small fishing village known as Prey Nokor. The area that the city now occupies was originally swampland, and was inhabited by Khmer people for centuries before the arrival of the Vietnamese. It should be noted that in Khmer folklore southern Vietnam was given to the Vietnamese government as a dowry for the marriage of a Vietnamese princess to a Khmer prince in order to stop constant invasions and pillaging of Khmer villages.[12]

Khmer territory

Beginning in the early 17th century, colonization of the area by Vietnamese settlers gradually isolated the Khmer of the Mekong Delta from their brethren in Cambodia proper and resulted in their becoming a minority in the delta.[citation needed] In 1623, King Chey Chettha II of Cambodia (1618–1628) allowed Vietnamese refugees fleeing the Trịnh–Nguyễn civil war in Vietnam to settle in the area of Prey Nokor and to set up a custom house there.[13] Increasing waves of Vietnamese settlers, which the Cambodian kingdom could not impede because it was weakened by war with Thailand, slowly Vietnamized the area. In time, Prey Nokor became known as Saigon. Prey Nokor was the most important commercial seaport to the Khmers. The loss of the city prevented the Cambodians access to the South China Sea. Subsequently, the Khmers' access to the sea was now limited to the Gulf of Thailand.

Archaeological Sites in Kampuchea Krom –Evidence of Khmer settlements

1. Oc Eo (O’Keo)

Óc Eo (from the Khmer "O'keo" អូរកែវ, meaning "Glass canal or precious canal") is an archaeological site in Thoi Sơn District in southern An Giang Province, Vietnam, in the Mekong River Delta region of Vietnam. It is also one of the modern day communes of Vietnam. Óc Eo may have been a busy port of the kingdom of Funan between the 1st and 7th centuries AD. Scholars use the term "Óc Eo Culture" to refer to the ancient material culture of the Mekong Delta region that is typified by the artifacts recovered at Óc Eo through archeological investigation.
Óc Eo is located in Vietnam

Excavation at Óc Eo began on February 10, 1942 after French archaeologists had discovered the site through the use of aerial photography. The first excavations were led by Louis Malleret. The site covers 450 ha.
Óc Eo is situated within a network of ancient canals that crisscross the low flatland of the Mekong Delta. One of the canals connects Óc Eo to the town's seaport while another goes 42 miles north-northeast to Angkor Borei. Óc Eo is longitudinally bisected by a canal, and there are four transverse canals along which pile-supported houses were perhaps ranged.[1]

The Vietnamese annexation of Champa

Champa, located in the middle of today’s Vietnam, was an indianized state populated by the Muslims called the Cham people. Champa was preceded in the region by a kingdom called Lin-yi (林邑, Middle Chinese *Lim Ip) or Lâm p (Vietnamese) that was in existence from 192 AD, but the historical relationship between Lin-yi and Champa is not clear. Champa reached its apogee in the 9th and 10th centuries. Thereafter began a gradual decline under pressure from Đi Vit, the Vietnamese polity centered in the region of modern Hanoi. In 1471, Viet troops sacked the northern Cham capital of Vijaya, and in 1697 the southern principality of Panduranga became a vassal of the Vietnamese emperor. In 1832, the Vietnamese emperor Minh Mng annexed the remaining Cham territories. Most descendants of the Cham people now live in Cambodia.
The territory of Champa, depicted in green, lay along the coast of present-day southern Vietnam. To the north (in yellow) lay Đại Việt; to the west (in blue), Angkor.

Cham Temples in Vietnam

Po Klong Garai is a Cham temple tower located in the medieval Cham principality of Panduranga, near the city of Phan Rang in what is now southern Vietnam. It was built in honor of the legendary king Po Klaung Garai by the historic King Jaya Simhavarman III, who ruled Champa from c. 1285 to 1307 and is called Chê Mân in Vietnamese.[1]

Po Klong Garai temple

MỹSơn (Vietnamese pronunciation: [mǐˀ səːn]) is a cluster of abandoned and partially ruined Hindu temples constructed between the 4th and the 14th century AD by the kings of Champa (Chiêm Thành in Vietnamese).
Po Nagar is a Cham temple tower founded sometime before 781 and located in the medieval principality of Kauthara, near modern Nha Trang in Vietnam. It is dedicated to Yan Po Nagar, the goddess of the country, who came to be identified with the Hindu goddesses Bhagavati and Mahishasuramardini, and who in Vietnamese is called Thiên Y Thánh Mâu.

The towers of Po Nagar are located on a hill.

In summary, Vietnam had to invade and annex Champa in today’s central Vietnam from 1471-1697 before it moved on to invade and annex Khmer territory in what is now called Kampuchea Krom from 1623 and completed its annexation of the territory on 6th June 1949 after the French Protectorate officially ceded the territory to Vietnam.

According to the evidences presented above, Khmers were the original inhabitants of Kampuchea Krom (Southern Vietnam) and the Cham people were the original inhabitants of central Vietnam. By these historical facts, one can conclude that the Vietnamese were not the original inhabitants of central Vietnam and Kampuchea Krom, but the invaders and occupiers of the regions.

So far, we know for a fact that Cambodia does not have any written historical records until after the 1900s, and what little is known about Cambodia came from few inscriptions inscribed in stones, and these inscriptions only described about the kings and their works but little else. The so-called khmer empire is nothing more than a small kingdom, and most of the khmer population lived around the area of today Angkor Wat.

Many academic works from scholars throughout the world concluded that the area of today southern part of Vietnam was largely abandoned, covered with jungle, without any established organized civil society, no law and order, sparsely populated by only a few different disorganized tribes. Among these tribes were the khmer, but certainly not the dominant tribe in the area. Historians and experts throughout the world also concluded that it was the Vietnamese migration to the area in the early 1600s that turned a mostly desolate place into a bustling place of commerce and organized civil society. Many khmer ethnic minority living in Vietnam today are Cambodian refugees, who migrated to Vietnam as a result of many reasons, some came in search for a living, others came to escape from war, genocide, and famine. The Vietnamese generously offered them a place of refuge, and they were very thankful for the Vietnamese assistance during their time of needs. Though the khmer ethnic minority in Vietnam shared the same language and culture as their brethren in Cambodia, they feel no affinity with the Cambodian, they consider themselves Vietnamese and want nothing to do with Cambodia.

As for the so-called khmer krom, there is no mentioning of it anywhere in Cambodia’s historical record before the 1900s. Not a single scholar, historian has ever mentioned its existence before the 1900s. Why? Because it was the creation of Sihanouk and his clique, and only came into existence in the 1900s. Some of these same people, including elements of fanatical, genocidal Khmer Rouge thugs ran to the West and formed the so-called KKF and other organizations and their affiliates to continue to disseminate lies and distortions of history, and participated in other terrorist activities. By revoking the status of KKF from the UN-sponsored organization, the UN had done the world a great favor, removing a blemish from the world organization. Vietnam will continue to expose the KKF for what they truly are - liars and terrorists. Vietnam will spare no efforts in assisting the UN to expel these terrorist members from other legitimate UN organizations and eventually shut down these foreign-based terror networks.

Wow, this is mind blowing. This makes a lot of sense because Khmer Empire as we know it were centered about Angkor Watt. When Siam finally destroyed this so called Khmer empire, they were disbursed and ran all over areas bordering current day S. Laos, E. Thailand, and S. Vietnam. These lands were basically jungles and swamps and shrubs. If anything, the Khmers never had full control over eastern Cambodia today and S. Vietnam today. These land were basically their waste land they didn't even care about.

I will believe this Youn CPP if he can share us his research. Otherwise this Youn CPP is only good at talking shit about the Khmer people and the Khmer Krom. As we know Youn and Siam are the dumbest in history, they still think Pol Pol genocide was a movie.

If the area of today southern part of Vietnam was largely abandoned, ABANDONED AREA it means it was already discovered by someone or belonged to someone, right? But was abandoned by whom? It’s surely by Khmers and it was discovered by Khmers, don’t tell me that area was covered with jungle, the jungle was everywhere in Asia at that time and more than we could imagine. The Khmer empire had a huge land in Asia it’s normal for them to develop the area that was necessary first then the others later but the one who stole the land from Khmers had no choice but developed that area right away, I’m not sure about that area was fully abandoned, at that era Cambodia was a small number of populations and how could they fight the crocodiles from the EAST and the tigers from the WEST? Therefore, they Khmer had had to protect the Angkor Wat first from Siam invasion and at the same time the Youn took advantage and controlled of that region (Prey Nokor) , it doesn’t mean fully abandoned but because of the war with the neighbouring countries,

Why do we even care about what these lowlife Viets say anyway? Faking up stuff is always their preoccupation. They are the ones who were homeless and the ones whom the Khmer King allowed to settle in the Khmer territory of Kampuchea Krom. So clearly, these Viets are compulsive liars and thus no one should ever feel the need to argue these Viet fools.

Anonymous said...

If anyone needs to find out about the truth of Kampuchea Krom, just look at the Khmer ruins, Khmer Script Tablet, and Khmer temples that easily predate the arrival of these homeless Viet landgrabbing thieves. In addition even in the modern book of Vietnam a Country Study it clearly states that the Viets were allowed to settled inside parts of the Khmer territories. Another thing to show to these shameless landgrabbing Viet thieves, is to show them the dates that the Viets wrestled each Kampuchea Krom province from the Khmer people. Furthermore, these Viets think that they know the term "Khmer Krom" more than the Khmer themselves, and that is why they always get f*cked up by the Khmer big time. Consider the Khmer terms "Youn" and "doun". These freaking Viets think that the Khmer are out to hate them. These stinking Viet landgrabbing thieves do not ever any understand the geographical terms regarding the uppland and lowland Khmer people at all. If the Viet heads are still retarded, then show them the Chinese records of old that describe about the Khmer people there since the 1st century there. The more these Viets are misrepresenting the Khmer people the more the world knows them as the shameless landgrabbing thieves.

I have been working with some of Vietnamese people but one of them is my friend, his name is Nguyen To, 47 years-old. One day, we were talking about our homeland then the story of Kampuchea Krom emerged by accidentally, he told me that the Kampuchea Krom was Cambodian land before and he added one more the Saigon city was also Cambodian land, but how did you know it? I asked, and he told me learning, reading, and the last words he said is the majority of Vietnamese people know about it and the Cambodian King loved Vietnamese women, he said just like that and looked at me. So, I’ve realized the facts.

Ironically speaking you – youn Hanoi, youn Yiekong, youn Yiekminh , Kon Yiecong, Kon Khmer mother/father ‘s freaking Yiek cong- have once never had a clue [ et-all ] about the historical Khmer. But only of being the thieves stole the land Khmer until today. Of course, you do it never end it, Don’t you?
After I was hearing in which word you said that Khmer has no recorded about the historical Khmer land, Khmer emperor in era starting from or early ages of the 1600’s, that it was not surprising by the rest of Khmer living around the world yet, maybe was just the part of your dreaming alone.
No matter of what you have just said that is because only part of your rights and your privilege to cursing all those things you wish it. But let me put you or turning your idea into this way , today is not only Khmer has a good been recording of our Khmer history by itself, but even also the International they are watching Khmer situation and you over all the issues ever since. On the other hand, you [youn] are obsequious servant to Hanoi [Ho chiminh.] That is the main reason why you all being of the pro-youn and was tried so hard to change the old story of Khmer since the first of century to the late of twenty first century in the year of 1979s.
Talking about the international once again has very well recorded about Khmer. So there is no reason for you [youn] to worry that about Khmer Krom, Khmer Kampuchea Krom, Khmer Kandal, and even Khmer Leu all of these Khmers made a fabrication or whatsoever, Okay.
As a matter of fact, should all Khmer never understanding about your: “Characteristic, attitude, aggressive,” clearly known Khmer.” that you were an internationally thieves.”
Here is the last but not least by looking to the Cpp’s thug that was empowering and installing by one of your master mind H.N. to staying in power for over some 30 years ago in Khmer Kandal today!
Besides that they have some of implemented with the creating treaty in 1979, 1982-83, and 2005. And with all of those treaties was signed a bilateral by the Viet and the Cpp’s puppet of Viet to vanquish Khmer at your last resort or what?
Wish you would dig it out more relevant of important facts about Khmer first before you dare talking about Khmer in future.
It is the same token as where were you coming from at first originally?

10:30 AM, Your writings are based on assumptions and your wild imagination because you have not quoted even one reference to back up your unsubstantiated claims. Khmer Krom, Kampuchea Krom and the Khmer Empire existed and extended beyond Angkor Wat to Burma in the west, to China in the north to Malaysia in the south and to the sea in the east when Vietnam was not even existed yet. There are archeological evidences, inscriptions that proved that Khmers were the original inhabitants of southern Vietnam, known as Kampuchea Krom. Just read the article above and here:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Khmer_Empire

No one who had an ounce of Khmer's blood would wrote an article of this
magnitude supporting Youn claimed of Khmer's land. It's probably Vietnamese scholars claimed to be Cambodian. They can say what ever they want. Facts still facts can't erase. UN might had a lot of Youn and their allies but their still justices, peaceful, intelligents, highly educated UN members who will be manipulate. Such as 1962 ICJ ruling awarding Preah Vihear to Cambodia. At that time Siam had more lawyers, money, allies but still loose. Don't let this Youn propaganda bother us because facts still facts. China will destroy them in no time over south china sea islands claimed. Gold will not be afraid of fire. We just had to stick with our demands of justices, watch our languages. We don't to be seem as racist, ttouble makers peace loving peoples do not support this kind of attitudes. Justice will prevails for ALL Khmers every where. God bless the justice peoples.

It is still true that the Khmers raised from Angkor Wat. The Funan Kingdom were a mixed of Indians and Malays with the native tribes in what is now southern Vietnam. The Khmers of Angkor Watt later conquered the Funan Kingdom, and annexed it into the Khmer empire. Khmers were not the native of southern Vietnam before the 9th century. Khmer history did not begin until the 9th century . Read
