Prime Minister Hun Sen left for Indonesia yesterday to attend an ASEAN conference for parliamentarians from member states.
The otherwise drab-sounding event packs a twist, though, as opposition and self-exiled leader Sam Rainsy is expected to also be in attendance.
Rainsy, who is self-exiled in France after being convicted of charges that his supporters claim are politically motivated, told the Post yesterday that he held a meeting with Indonesian Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa on September 13 over the political situation in Cambodia.
“I can only say that I requested to Marty and other parliamentarians to support the UN Special Rapporteur for Cambodia on his recommendations for election organisation in Cambodia,” Rainsy said.
He was referring to Surya Subedi, who wrote in an August report to the UN that a political solution should be found to enable Rainsy, as the leader of the opposition, to play a full role in Cambodian politics.
Rainsy did not elaborate further or go into detail about any interactions he might have with Hun Sen on the trip, though it would be their first public meeting in several years.
The Cambodian Democratic Movement for National Rescue, which Rainsy chairs from abroad, has been seeking support for the opposition from ASEAN states.
Opposition lawmaker Mu Sochua yesterday pointed to an action by the Philippine Senate, which unanimously adopted a resolution supporting Subedi’s recommendations on the national elections.
Sochua did not know if Rainsy and Hun Sen would meet at the conference.
Srey Thamrong, Hun Sen’s adviser, told reporters at the Phnom Penh International Airport that the premier was scheduled to deliver a speech at the opening ceremony last night and will return home this morning.

With increased pressures- the pressures of the unification of the SRP and the HRP and the Philippine's supports for Rainsy's return to Cambodia, may Hun Sen might force himself to talk to Rainsy about his return. It's been shown in the past that, when cornered, Hun Sen normally give in.
This guy look like Hyena!
Will Hun cent forgive his opponent? How would Hun cent acts infront of Asians'leaders?
Looks retarded....
No problemo! look at my hands are two colors.
Don't fall for Hun Sen tricks. Even if he is cornered to give in, Cambodia still belongs to CPP and Youn.
Hun Sen will shame Sam Rainsy and lies to the nation. Of course CPP dogs will buy anything Hun Sen say. Even when Hun Sen ceded the Lhmer land to Youn, the CPP dogs still believe Hun Sen that Cbodian is now 30% bigger as Cbodian gained more land from Youn.
If Sam Rainsy returns to Khmer and be one of CPP dogs then it's better he stays outside and bring unity.

Stay outside and bring unity of the Khmer oversea, is very good idea. No sacrifice no fighting on the right battlefield, it will not help our country and the poor Khmer people.
Please remember, no one on this planet will do some thing for free. Also the Philippine think the same as the Chinese or the Vietnamese. They invest, because first they are looking for their own profit.
This is another way to split the Khmer from Khmer.
I disagree. The Phillipines and the Chinese are not the same as the Vietnamese. The Phillipines are much more closer to us Khmer by sea and by history.
Even the Chinese are nothing like the Vietnamese. The Phillipines have no intention to split Khmer. The only person splitting Khmer is Hun Sen and CPP. Only a CPP dog would say Hun Sen is the best leader in the world.
Hun Sen always have the option to split the country in East and West. Why not give the West to Sam Rainsy?
People who voted the CPP at the last election are certainly those who listened to Hun Sen. By treating Cambodians inside the country who listened to Hun Sen as dogs, you are writing off a big chunk of electorate. How can you expected to win with this accusation?
My job is not to worry about those people. I’ll never convince them. I am disparaging them. They are just Hun Sen dogs or youn dogs, because they listed to Hun Sen and voted CPP. Is it what you want to say about those Cambodians who voted the CPP?
