Muslim official dismisses Thai claims

Give our kids a better deal
Osma Hasan, Secretary of State of Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training

PHNOM PENH (Cambodia Herald) - Cambodian Muslims pass through Thailand on their way to work in Malaysia and are not involved in the Muslim insurgency in the south, a senior Muslim official said Friday.

Osman Hasan, secretary of state at the Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training, told reporters that the overland journey to Malaysia was cheaper than flying.

On Monday, the Bangkok Post quoted Thai Defense Minister Yuthasak Sasiprapa as saying that Cambodia should ban  Cambodian Muslims from heading for southern Thailand.

Information Minister Khieu Kanharith rejected the reported remarks on Tuesday. Prime Minister Hun Sen said earlier that Muslims in Cambodia were living in peace and had no need to work as mercenaries in southern Thailand.
