Lee's was the first visit by a S Korean leader to the islands, called Takeshima in Japan and Dokdo in Korea [Reuters]
Japan says it will take a long-running territorial dispute with South Korea to the Hague-based International Court of Justice, after Lee Myung-bak, South Korea's president, made a surprise visit to a group of disputed islands this week.
The islands, known as Takeshima in Japan and Dokdo in South Korea, lie equidistant from the two mainlands and are believed to contain frozen natural gas deposits potentially worth billions of dollars.
"We must consider measures to peacefully resolve the dispute based on international law, including filing a suit with the International Court of Justice," Koichiro Gemba, Japan's foreign minister, announced on Saturday.
However, Japan may find it difficult to bring the matter to the court in The Netherlands, which requires an agreement between the disputing parties to make its ruling binding.
South Korea rejected repeated proposals by Japan in the 1950s and '60s to let the court rule on the issue.
Lee became the first South Korean leader on Friday to make the trip to the islands, which have been a persistent irritant in relations between the two countries.
"We would like to take the step in the not-too-distant future. Until now, the Japanese government has considered what impact such action may have on Japan-South Korea ties," Gemba said.
"But the president's visit to Takeshima made such considerations unnecessary. We must present Japan's position to the international community."
Gemba made the remarks after meeting Japan's ambassador to South Korea, Masatoshi Muto, who was recalled to Tokyo after Lee's trip to the islands, which lie at the centre of a decades-long dispute.
Brutal colonisation
Many Koreans resent Japan's brutal colonisation from 1910 to 1945.
Historical disputes continue to mar their relations, despite close economic ties and shared concerns over North Korea's missile and nuclear programmes.
Lee toured the islands and shook hands with coastguards as a South Korean flag fluttered in the breeze, disregarding Japan's warnings that the visit would strain already prickly relations.
He also travelled to a larger island called Ulleungdo, off the Korean peninsula's east coast, which is not disputed, and made the final leg under tight security with military and coast guard escort.
Officials in South Korea said the visit was meant to highlight the islands' importance as a natural reserve and was not aimed at stirring up trouble.
Yoshihiko Noda, Japan's prime minister, said the trip was "extremely deplorable".
Hours after Lee's visit, the glass front door at a South Korean consulate general's office in Hiroshima was shattered by a brick.
Police guarding the building heard the sound of shattering glass around 2:50am local time on Saturday, and saw a motorcycle speed away, national broadcaster NHK said, adding that police suspect it was linked to Lee's trip.

Dear All,
Hun Sen is scare to death with his Hanoi Master, let alone taking his own master to courts.
Yes, we do have a legal case against land thieves Yuon.
A good and competent legal team can and should bring the case of land giveaways by traitor Hun Sen to Hanoi.
The legal complaints shall include, but not limited to the followings :
1. The illegitimacy of the Hun Sen's Government
( Re: Peace Accord 1991 and 1993 )
2. Political paybacks by Hun Sen using national resources for personal gains
3. Hanoi systematically set up a puppet government in a neighbouring country with the INTENT of annexing that country.
Therefore all treaties were legally signed
" Upon Duress " !!!
A Khmer Patriot
Yeah! Let see how it play out.Bravo Japon paved the way for Cambodia to do the same to Hanoi.
For all compatriots khmers whose loves our nation out there please gather all documentation that relates to our Island or land that Yuon was stolen and takes this encroacherer to ICJ court like Japon did....Good luck to Japon.Cpp should be doing the same to Yiek cong.
Kmenhwatt.
Hold it!!! be patient my fellow compatriot, give him[Hun Sen] a chance to breath, I recently had a second though of our PM, I think he is smarter than he looks, we don't know what's capable of, I am gaining more confidence with our PM.
Remember, the easiest thing to do is "SPEAKING", and most of people are good at "SPEAKING", and that's all they are good at. Doing to accomplishing thing is a different matter.
To 8:48 AM
What do you mean by saying " give Hun Sen a chance to breathe " ?
32 years of dictatorship and losses of Khmer lands to Yuon are NOT enough ?
You're gaining more confidence with YOUR PM Hun Sen, while Yuon are gaining more and more of Khmer lands
I don't think he is a RealKhmer.
Dear khmerization/I.K.Media...
I young Khmer professional, would like to know how come our Khmer language in RFA or on others website were so differences from what I have learned in Khmer's school? I am talking about the way they write in Computer these days? For me its kind of funny to spell like english's language.
It that how we have to adapt to the way the new writing like this!? When did the way of writing change? And why? Its hard to the"bro corp=spelling" the new way of writing putting letters or vovels in front of each other like Roman's written method.I was shock to see and confused.
Thank you,khmerization/k.I
Some of you sound like pro-Japan. Are we playing double standard here? On the Phillipino island issue, we didnt want to include it in the ASEAN final paper. We were ding for being bought by the Chinese. Korea is investing a lot in Cambodia too. We should not take side.

I am not too sure what you mean by the "new way" ie "putting letters or vovels in front of each other..."
If I understood your question correctly, then the issue is not the way they were spelt, but it is the issue with your computer cannot recognise the Khmer fonts.
If you have not already install "Khmer Unicode" on your computer, then give it a try and you might be able to read Khmer websites without the messy vovoles!!!
Hope this helps...

10:01 AM, agree with you. Hun Sen had 33 years already, so do we want to give him another 33 years? I think 33 years is more than enough "chance to breathe" for Hun Sen. We need to give someone else "a chance to breathe", especially the new generations of Khmer intellectuals.
We Khmer will give Hun Sen a chance to breath in Vietnam. Hun Sen must not be a coward and go live in Vietnam with no bodyguards. Currently Hun Sen has thousands of bodyguards stationed outside his compounds and property.
Will the Vietnamese give Hun Sen a chance to breath with no bodyguards, as his time is almost expired?
3:01 PM. We are not pro-Japan or against South Korea.
All we are saying is that Japan can pave the way at the ICJ for us Khmers to get back our " stolen " from Yuon.
Sihanouk Lost the most to our lands and Islands...I agree, Hun Sen did put a plug to hold water from leaking more.....though!
If Sihanouk listening Son Ngoc Thanh we don't lost khmer village part of Rattanak kiri, Mundol kiri...Vietnam has encroach in 1979and didn't withraw yet, my relative's village now are in Vietnam, I'm visiting them now and then...
What is your relatives called themselves? Or register in their citizenship as Yuon or Khmer? Please no offend! Just curious because this kind of shit never happened before,I knew that Khmer krom consider themselves as Khmer, but register as Yuon citizens.when to learn Yuon language at school.
We can blame a lot of idiots for losing Khmer land to youns, including Sihnouk, the stupid Khmer Rouge who messed up and attacked youns to give them reason to set up Hun Sen, stupid is what stupid does indeed.
You are right, when you are small and weak you shouldn't go out there and attacked the biger forces like Yuons,Khmer rouges miscuculated the consequential of dominoes affected upon our weak and small nation, the same thing with Sinhanuk cuculated the power of his friend uncle Ho chi Minh.
Because of all these happened then, now Hun Yuon Sen [Cpp] was born-the regime as we know today, created to benefits no other but Yuon Hanoi.
As for Japan that takes Korea to ICJ for these pieces of two rocks in the middle of the water is paving the way for all khmers to learn from her.If Khmer wants to get their land that lost to their neighbours country back.Watch and learn.....Bravo Japan...good luck....

Ladies and Gentlmen
Let's stop the blaming games, and start finding the solutions.
1. Support and vote for the newly merge DMNR
2. Try to bring a case of illegal land giveaways by Hun Sen to the International Courts of Justice at The Hague

Don't get me wrong though, most of
them are courageuos and patriotic
but again they are super super idiotic.
I agree with 5:34 AM
Once and for all, let the ICJ decide the illegal land
giveaways by Hun Sen to his Yuon's Master, just like we
did with Siem.
I agree! Khmer Rouge force was stupid attacking and burning Vietnamese village-they were khmer krom people, khmer attacking khmer? Khmer Rouge should go to Hanoi and try to do that.......stupid!!
