HNOM PENH, 27 June 2012 (Cambodia Herald) – US Ambassador William Todd (pictured) expressed
concern over recent violent land disputes during talks with Foreign
Minister Hor Namhong Wednesday.
"These confrontations underscore the need for clearly delineated property rights, as well as the need for a dispute-resolution system that is independent, transparent, well-understood by the public, and treats all Cambodians equally and according to the rule of law," said the US embassy in its press statement.
The meeting Wednesday morning coincided with a clash between authorities and protesters seeking the release of 13 women serving prison sentences for illegally occupying land.
Prime Minster Hun Sen has announced plans to distribute land to poor people with the assistance of youth volunteers.
