PHNOM PENH (Cambodia Herald) - The National Election Committee has fined opposition leader Sam Rainsy 10 million riel for violating commune election rules with an attack on Prime Minister Hun Sen, sources said.
The fine follows a complaint filed by the ruling Cambodian People’s Party last week over Sam Rainsy's description of Hun Sen as a "traitor" in a video address on the last day of the campaign. He also accused the prime minister of offering 99-year land concessions to domestic and foreign investors.
Lon Chheng Kai, presiding judge at the election committee, said Monday's ruling found that Sam Rainsy violated not only the law but also discipline, procedures and ethics relating to commune elections.
"We just fined him but we could have revoked his election rights," he said.
Lon Chheng Kai said Sam Rainsy had the right to appeal.
