Japan grants $3.5 mln to extend scholarship program

PHNOM PENH, 9 June 2012 (Cambodia Herald) - Japan has announced a grant of ¥283 million ($3.5 million) to extend a scholarship program for young government officials.

In a statement, the Japanese Embassy said notes were exchanged Friday between Long Visalo, secretary of state at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, and Japanese Ambassador Kuroki Masafumi.

Since 2000, the embassy said, Japan has provided ¥3.75 billion ($34 million) for 12 batches of 248 students to study in Japan. With this new grant for the 13th batch, 24 new fellows will study in Japan for two years.

The statement said the program has been modified this year to include science and technology studies. "We strongly hope the fellows of the past and the future will contribute to the development of Cambodia and become a bridge between our two countries," it said.

May only the best and the brightest get the scholarship !!!

I don't think so because of corruption. These scholarships are offered to govt. officials, so there would be bribery involved. I hope Japan offers scholarships to the brightest students based on their own conducted-test results, not through selection by corrupt Cambodian officials.

Definitely a good news to the japanese students! I hope this fund will go to it's right place and not to official's pockets. Just saying.
